Superman and Batman: Best Friends...and Brothers?!

If you visited either DCComics.com or VertigoComics.com yesterday, you likely saw our slides suggesting that Alfred E. Neuman was joining the DCU as our newest Robin or teasing a new spinoff series called Canadian Vampire—co-written by Scott Snyder and Jeff Lemire. They were, of course, a joke, and anyone who clicked on either of the slides was taken to a page revealing the gags.

Unsurprisingly, many of you called these as jokes before you clicked on the link. But how many of you caught our other April Fool’s Day prank?

In addition to the fake projects, we posted a link to “newly updated” profile pages for Batman and Superman, and if you read any of them, you may have noticed a shocking connection between Bruce Wayne and Clark Kent…and their mothers.

Here are the profiles, if you didn’t catch them yesterday:

BATMAN

Dark Knight. Caped Crusader. World’s Greatest Detective. Whatever you know him as, wherever you know him from—the blockbuster movies, TV shows, video games, cartoons, or millions of comics—Batman is proof you don’t need superpowers to be a superhero… and the poster boy for what a bad childhood can do to you.

Millionaire Bruce Wayne was just a kid when he watched his parents get gunned down during a mugging in Gotham City. The crime would define his life, as he dedicated himself to becoming the world’s greatest weapon against crime—the Batman. What the world doesn’t know is that Bruce’s mother, Martha Wayne, was the real target for the mob hit the night that Bruce’s parents were murdered. While in the ambulance it was discovered that she was still alive, and the doctors were able to save her. She signed over guardianship of Bruce to the family butler, Alfred Pennyworth, in hopes that the young boy would be protected, and she was put into the Witness Protection Program and sent to Smallville, Kansas—a quiet town where nothing ever happens.

There Martha met and married a nice young man named Jonathan Kent. With a new inability to carry a child due to the bullet wound, Martha and Jonathan were unable to have the baby they so longed for. However, their prayers were answered when out of the sky, a rocket landed in a nearby field as the couple was driving by. There was a small baby in the rocket who they adopted and gave the name Clark Kent, and who would grow up to be Superman!

Forget his Batarangs, Batmobile, or Utility Belt filled with high-tech weapons. Batman is the most feared superhero of all, because he’s pushed himself to the absolute pinnacle of human achievement. He’s a brilliant detective who’s mastered fighting techniques the world’s barely heard of. An Olympic-caliber athlete with a plan for every occasion, Batman’s seemingly always five steps ahead of his foes. But in his crusade against injustice, two questions always loom: How far will he go to protect the innocent, and will he sacrifice his humanity along the way? And how long can he team up with Superman and yet remain oblivious to the family connection?

SUPERMAN

Look! Up in the sky! It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s…Well, you know how it ends, don’t you? It’s a sentence so iconic, there are probably kids shouting it in Swahili as you read this.

The most recognized superhero in pop culture, Superman has been elevated to mythic folk hero status. Rocketed to Earth from the dying planet Krypton, baby Kal-El was found by a farming couple, Martha and Jonathan Kent, who named the boy Clark Kent and raised him as their own. Discovering his enormous powers, they instilled in him strong moral values—and inspired him to become a hero.

Superman has super-everything—strength, speed, flight, invulnerability, X-ray, heat vision…and a world-famous brother. What the world doesn’t know is that Clark’s mother, Martha, once changed her name from Wayne to Kent. Martha was the real target for the mob hit the night that her husband Thomas Wayne was murdered. While in the ambulance it was discovered that she was still alive, and the doctors were able to save her. She signed over guardianship of their son Bruce to the family butler, Alfred Pennyworth, in hopes that Bruce would be protected, and she was put into the Witness Protection Program and sent to Smallville, Kansas—a quiet town where nothing ever happens.

There Martha met and married the local farmer Jonathan Kent. With a new inability to carry a child due to the bullet wound, Martha and Jonathan were unable to have the baby they so longed for. However, their prayers were answered when out of the sky, a rocket landed in a nearby field as the couple was driving by. There was a small baby in the rocket who they adopted and gave the name Clark, and who would grow up to be Superman!

A universal icon, Superman means different things to the many diverse people he inspires: He’s an alien; an immigrant from a faraway land just looking to help; a country boy fighting the never-ending battle for truth and justice. He’s the most powerful being on the planet, yet Superman’s amazing abilities are also a melancholy reminder of how different he is from the people he’s dedicated to protect.

Yes, they’re not just best friends and two of the most beloved super heroes on the planet. Superman and Batman are also half-brothers.

Or at least they were for one day in the hearts and minds of some of our fans. The authentic profiles have now been restored to the Batman and Superman pages, but not before several of you commented on the changes. And why not? Stranger things have happened in comics. And it is a pretty big coincidence that both their mothers are named Martha.

So what do you think? Were you fooled by the fake bios?

DC Comics Reveals the Next Robin

DC Comics shocked WonderCon attendees when they revealed Batman’s surprising new boy wonder during the DC COMICS – THE NEW 52panel on Saturday.

We were at WonderCon this weekend and certainly revealed plenty of great stuff during our panels, but we’re pretty sure Scott Snyder and Jeff Lemire are a little busy to be cooking up silly spinoffs and that Batman would fail to see the humor in letting Alfred E. Neuman anywhere near the Batcave.

Yes, in honor of April 1st (which also happens to be Alfred E. Neuman’s birthday), both DCComics.com and VertigoComics.com were given fake homepage slides. So whether you were fooled by DC Comics’ promise of a new Robin or Vertigo’s Canadian Vampire announcement, congratulations. You’ve been had.

But don’t sweat it. April Fool’s Day is supposed to be fun, and that’s all this little stunt was about. Even better, we’re not about to stop. There’s plenty of April Foolery to be had in comic shops this month. Why, have you seen our 13 MAD variant covers?

You haven’t?! Well, you can look for them gracing some of your favorite DC COMICS – THE NEW 52 titles all month long. Or you can just click here to see them all.

On behalf of all of us at DC Entertainment, have a happy April 1st!

DC Comics’ C2E2 exclusive variant covers envelop three of our most popular series! Priced at $10 each, ACTION COMICS #19 with art by Tony S. Daniel, BATMAN #17 with art by Greg Capullo, and JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #1 with art by David Finch.

5.2 Reasons We Love the Multiverse

The idea of what could have been always intrigues. It’s literally the basis of fictional storytelling. Those magic words: what if?

What if a stranger visitor from another world came to Earth and our yellow sun granted him amazing abilities far beyond that of normal man? What if a young boy with unlimited funds and resources saw his parents gunned down in front of him and began a never-ending quest for justice? What if a dying alien gifted a young pilot with the most powerful weapon in the galaxy?

These questions gave birth to some of the World’s Greatest Super Heroes—but the questions didn’t stop there. Throughout the years, creators explored other alternatives, other worlds, where Superman landed in Soviet Russian instead of America, where the Justice Society served as a secret government agency instead of public heroes, where Wonder Woman ventured to man’s land during the Victorian Era, and more.

There’s a literal multiverse of possibilities out there, and we love exploring them all.

Earlier this week, DC Comics and WB announced the upcoming Infinite Crisis multiplayer online battle arena game, which features characters from all across the DC Universe—and beyond—venturing into various other Earths including the world of Batman: Vampire and Gotham by Gaslight. The possibilities alone sends our minds reeling from an overdose of awesome, and to help placate ourselves until the game’s release we’re going to take a look at other multiverse tales with 5.2 Reasons We Love the Multiverse!

1. Superman: Red Son

Arguably one of the greatest Elseworlds tales ever written, with a surprise ending that will simply blow your mind, Mark Millar’s Superman: Red Son features a Superman raised in Soviet Russia and explores the intrinsic heroism at the heart of the character. More importantly, it also features a Batman in a fuzzy hat complete with Bat-ears. It’s awesome.

2. JSA: The Liberty Files

Starring the Bat, the Clock and the Owl, JSA: The Liberty Files re-imagined the Justice Society members as secret operatives hunting to uncover the mystery behind a German secret weapon codenamed “the Superman.” Perfect for any fan of action, espionage and super heroes, it exemplifies Elseworlds storytelling at its finest.

3. Batman: In Darkest Knight

Batman becomes a Green Lantern. Seriously, what more do you need to know?

4. JLA: The Nail

Written and drawn by Alan Davis and based around the proverbial rhyme “For Want of a Nail,” JLA: The Nail shows the massive and world-changing consequences one simple act can cause. When a nail leads to Jonathan and Martha Kent never discovering the baby Kal-El, it causes a chain reaction that completely alters the course of the DC Universe, creating a world where metahumans are feared and hated.

5. Superman: Secret Identity

An Elseworld of an Elseworld (sort of), Superman: Secret Identity by Kurt Busiek and Stuart Immonen follows Clark Kent—a boy named after the world’s most famous comic book super hero. That’s right, Clark’s from “Earth Prime,” the original home of the CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS hero Superboy-Prime. Growing up, Clark resented his name and the jokes that came with it. That is until the day he actually developed super powers.

5.1 Kingdom Come

Don't play this game. You know this.

5.2 The Earth One Line

With More Still to Come!

That’s really just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the multiverse. There’s still a ton of tales out there we didn’t mention, including the current Earth 2 ongoing and the upcoming Multiversity limited series by Grant Morrison. What are some of your favorite other Earth tales? Let us know in the comments!

Celebrating a Classic

Fans, collectors and industry professionals in Los Angeles gathered last night beneath the bat-signal to celebrate the DC Comics classic Batman TV series with an exciting event at Meltdown Comics that featured the original Batmobile, new Batman products, props from the show and more!

Special guest Adam West walked the party talking to fans and checking out the awesomely cheeky new Junk Food t-shirts on display, while fans and professionals alike enjoyed hanging out in the cleverly recreated “Batcave,” a section of the store that was remodeled by Junk Food to give the feel of Batman’s center of operations, complete with the original Bat-Phone, Bat-O-Rang and Bat-Shield, along with the authentic Robin costume worn by Burt Ward.

Also on display at the event were a slew of upcoming Batman Classic TV Series products from companies such as Rubie’s Costume Co., Mezco Figures, New Era and notably Mattel—who debuted their Batman Ken and Catwoman Barbie figures, a slate of vintage-styled six-inch figures that included the never-before-seen The Joker and their deliciously retro 2013 San Diego Comic-Con Exclusive, the Batusi Batman action figure.

Unfortunately, no one broke out into the Batusi at the event (and believe us, we were looking). However, we did catch Batman fans like Chris Daughtry, Pendleton Ward and The Walking Dead’s Steven Yeun mingling with comics-industry pros like Jim Lee.

All attendees sipped specialty drinks with names like the POW!, ZAP! and the to-die-for BAM!, all handed out by a team of Cat-masked and caped servers. Near the back, fans could watch episodes of the TV series in the comfort of Meltdown’s theater, or ham it up in a unique photo booth that allowed fans to recreate the show’s infamous wall-scaling scene.

Of course, lest you think that your good friends here at DC Comics showed up to the party empty-handed, we also took the occasion to announce our newest digital-first comic title, BATMAN ’66, which is set in the world of the TV series. We also showed off some cool art from the series by the Eisner-winning Jonathan Case, which you can see right over here.

Photos from the event can be seen in the slideshow above. So what do you think? Are you ready for another ride in the Batmobile?

5.2 Reasons it's the Right Time to Dig the Batman TV Series

Welcome back, Bat-fans to another installment of the weekly DCComics.com feature 5.2 Reasons. When we last saw this column, it focused on the heroes of another world. The riddle now becomes…what to write about this time?

[READ IN YOUR BEST ADAM WEST VOICE]

Hm, time... time is money. Money... can be spent. Spent on services... and goods. Goods give you an easier life... life is a journey, an incredible journey. HomeWard bound... Travel. When you travel, you need directions... north, south, east, West...

[READ IN YOUR BEST BURT WARD VOICE]

Holy disposable income, Bat-fans! That’s it! The new lines of products heading to stores based on the 1966 Batman television series staring Adam West and Burt Ward as the Dark Knight and Robin, the Boy Wonder!

[READ AS YOU WILL]

That’s right, everyone. Licensed products based on the popular TV show are headed to toy stores and comic shops everywhere (and of course the Interwebs, accessible via your personal Batcomputer), which is enough reason for us to want to break out into the Batusi. From toys to dolls to costumes and more, we’re giving you 5.2 Reasons it’s the Right Time to Dig the Batman TV Series!

1. Action Figures from Mattel

Of course there’s Batman and Robin in a special two-pack, the Riddler, and many of the Caped Crusader’s other classic foes, but more importantly, there’s also the Penguin—meaning you can finally complete your Burgess Meredith toy collection by placing it alongside your Mickey Goldmill and Henry Bemis figures—and, wait for it, Surfing Batman, complete with Bermuda shorts. Hopefully, he also comes equipped with Bat-Shark Repellent.

2. Costumes from Rubies

Officially licensed costumes based on Batman, Robin, Catwoman and the Joker are currently planned (here’s hoping the Joker comes with Cesar Romero’s signature ‘stache). So, now when you bust out into that Batusi (mastered it yet?), you can do it in style—and then upload it onto the Web and send us the link, please.

3. Batmobile

Nothing will beat shouting, “Quick, to the Batmobile” while hanging out with your friends and then pulling this replica out of nowhere. Okay, well, lots of things could beat that, but it’ll still be pretty great. Naturally, you should then follow it up with “Atomic batteries to power, turbines to speed, ready to move out,” and then run out of the room.

4. Junk Food Clothing

Junk Food has launched a new collection for men and women featuring imagery inspired by the characters and quotes from the classic television series. So now, like Batman himself, you can help spread the message of the importance of safety—because as we all know, safety comes first!

5. Even More Swag

A calendar from MEAD, 18-inch figures from NECA, two-inch Mezco figures of Batman and Robin complete with their own Batmobile, and a Batman Ken and Catwoman Barbie from Mattel. And that’s just what we know so far! At least for the next, oh…say, 7 or so hours. Why’s that? Hold that thought...
