DC Week-In-Review: Post FCBD and Superman: Unbound Edition

No two ways about it. It’s hard to top free comics. All of us here at DC work on comic books, and we still love Free Comic Book Day. No matter who you are, it’s impossible not to feel a little deflated that Monday after FCBD weekend. It’s the most Monday-like of Mondays. As if the day spent the entire weekend drinking power smoothies and doing P90x workouts so that it could completely kick our butts when it returned.

So how did we survive and get through another week? By focusing on all of the great DC Comics stuff to hit the web this week, much of it right here on DCComics.com. And guess what? We’re 100% free to read too!

Here’s what went down this week on the DC Comics website…

Let’s face it, the only way to get through the Monday morning after FCBD is to spend it talking about FCBD. That’s what all of our great fans were doing on Twitter, so we compiled some of those tweets and photos into one awesome post. You want to know how DC fans spent their Free Comic Book Day, well it’s all right here.

We also posted the Jim Lee and Scott Snyder Superman: Unchained interview from the back of our FCBD comic, in case you weren’t able to pick it up this weekend.

And speaking of Superman un-thinging things, this week also saw the release of Superman: Unbound, the latest DC Universe Original Animated Movie. If you haven’t seen it yet, you can now buy or rent it on Blu-Ray, DVD, OnDemand and Digital Download. And if you like to sample before you buy, check out this exclusive clip from the film.

Okay, okay, we hear you Batman fans grumbling. We have you covered this week as well. Did you see this awesome new Batman: Arkham Unhinged DC Collectibles variant cover?

Or how about these GORGEOUS Jae Lee pages from BATMAN/SUPERMAN #1. Those should please fans of both characters, as well as pretty much everyone with a set of working eyeballs.

And if you like early looks, “What’s New in the New 52” sure didn’t disappoint this week with sketches of Cheshire and Dr. Phosphorus. One question, though. Do you think Cheshire’s hair ever gets tangled up around those swords? If she’s not careful when she draws those things, she could be in for one embarrassing trip to the hairstylist.

On Thursday, we checked in with our friend Robert Venditti, who has quite a lot to say about Green Lantern. Which is good, since we don’t want writers who don’t have anything to say. So what can we expect from his opening storyline? Click here, Lantern fans, to find out.

We also broke down the 5.2 Reasons to join the Suicide Squad. Hopefully one of them is a good medical plan and comprehensive life insurance…

And speaking of Suicide Squad, we also gave you a look at its shocking final page in today’s “This Just Happened” feature. Though, actually, the entire issue #20 was pretty shocking. You should read it. Preferably before you click on this spoiler-filled link.

You might have heard about Infinite Crisis and Batman: Arkham Origins, two of the highly anticipated new video games coming out from DC Entertainment later this year. Well, if you’re as excited as we are about them, you’re going to want to get your hands on these upcoming statues and action figures from DC Collectibles based on characters from the games. Somehow, we doubt Hera would approve of Wonder Woman’s new look.

Finally, over in the DC Comics Fan Family blog, we talked about the fun new LEGO Batman game which is now available for the iOS. And we posted a crack-up worthy clip from the fun new LEGO Batman movie which will soon be available on Blu-Ray and DVD. Finally, we offered up ten awesome Mother’s Day gift suggestions, of which LEGO Batman isn’t one (hey, it can’t all be about LEGO Batman, people!).

And with that, we wrap up this installment of the Week-In-Review. Because we’ve reached the end of what we wanted to recap, and NOT that we just remembered we still haven’t bought Mom a gift. That’s totally not why we’re wrapping this up and Googling the nearest Williams-Sonoma… Yeah…

Have a happy Mother’s Day weekend, and we’ll see you again in seven!

DC Week-In-Review: April 26th

Last week was all about some of our favorite DC super heroes fighting with each other to save the world. This week saw some of our other favorites fighting with each other over…a sandwich.

But to be fair, it was a legendary sandwich!

Okay, once again we’re getting ahead of ourselves. Here’s what went down this week on the DC Comics website…

Yes, Injustice: Gods Among Us has now been in stores for over a week, and yet, we can’t get enough. We’re ready for more (crazed DC Comics ubergeeks that we are), and we started things off with our first glimpse of what’s to come—Injustice’s first DLC character, Lobo!

Also, in the DC Comics Fan Family blog—which all of you with kids are reading, right?—we kicked off a series of weekly fan giveaways. Now, these are different than the occasional Twitter giveaways we run in the fan blog. These giveaways aren’t done on Twitter, and the prizes we’ll be giving away here are things meant to be enjoyed with all the little future DC Comics readers in your life. Like this week’s prize, a free download of the DC Super Friends – Hawaiian Ice Mystery storybook app. You have until the end of next Monday, April 29th to enter, so don’t miss out.

And as if that wasn’t good enough, we’re also offering a special limited time offer on subscriptions to any of DC’s all-ages comics. If you subscribe before May 6th, you can save 55% off the cover price! Here’s where to go for all the info.

Okay, okay. We know what you’re thinking. All of this is great if you’re a parent, but wake me up when you have something cool going on for the rest of us. Well, it’s time to stop hitting the snooze button my friend because we’re currently giving away copies of Injustice. You can find out how to enter here, but you need to act quickly. This giveaway ends tonight at midnight, which means you don’t have much longer.

But there was a lot more to this week than just cheap comics and free games (though, really, do you need more than that?). After all, this week saw the Cartoon Network debut of Teen Titans Go!, the newest DC Animated Series. We’re really excited about this new show, and the two new clips we debuted on the site on Tuesday only added to our fervor. But what really set us over the edge was the premiere episode, which we enjoyed the heck out of. And then we wrote about why we enjoyed the heck out of it. And then we went out for awesome sandwiches and pie to celebrate.

If you missed the premiere of Teen Titans Go!, you can look for the debut episode to air again tomorrow morning on Cartoon Network as part of the DC Nation block of programming. And speaking of DC Nation, this week we added the last of the Season 1 DC Nation Shorts to the site. You can now check them all out in our video section. Or if you’re just interested in the final five, you can click their links below. And if you were wondering, we did save some of the best for last.

Amethyst: Princess of Gemworld

The Bat Man of Shanghai

Super Best Friends Forever

Animal Man

DC’s Worlds Funnest

Hey, while you’re at it, be sure to vote for your favorite series of DC Nation Shorts. Right now, SBFF is only in second place while The Bat Man of Shanghai has fallen to third, and we can’t have that, people!

Wednesday brought us some great new comics…and some equally great new captions. Don’t know what we’re talking about? Then you should really check out this week’s special edition of Caption This!.

Also on Wednesday, DC Comics Editor-in-Chief Bob Harras offered up another edition of “What’s New in The New 52,” this time giving us a look at Ig Guara’s character designs for The Green Team: Teen Trillionaires. But that was only the beginning. Later in the week, he gave us our first glimpse of Jonah Hex in present day Gotham, before offering an intriguing look at a Kenneth Rocafort Cyborg Superman sketch. Hmm…

The Green Team was also a subject of conversation on Thursday, as series writers Art Baltazar and Franco discussed the upcoming comic and gave us a first look at some interior pages.

We also heard from Geoff Johns on his final Green Lantern issue (which is only a month away…sniff!) and announced some intriguing Trinity War tie-in comics.

But hands down, the most exciting news coming out of Thursday was the announcement that Walmart will be selling tickets in their stores for an exclusive advance screening of Man of Steel. We don’t know about you, but a chance to see this movie before everyone else with a theater full of Superman fans… That might as well be our Kryptonite.

Spoiler alert time! Which of you out there have already read JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK #19? Whoa… It’s surprising enough that the Flash is guest-starring in this series, but Swamp Thing as well? But the biggest shocker was the arrival of… Well, click here to find out.

So what are you doing this weekend? Because we know what we’re doing. We’ll be at C2E2 with another awesome slate of panels. If you’ll be there as well, you’ll want to check them out because, well, you never know what might be revealed.

Busy week, no doubt, but we have two days of amazing hot dogs and cosplay to look forward to before doing it all over again. We’ll see you again in seven!

DC Week-In-Review: April 19th

It may be going up a bit later than usual, but if you think we’d let this week pass without another patented (as soon as we remember to call the patent office) DC Week-In-Review, you’ve clearly been hanging out with B’dg because that is NUTS!

No, it’s been an unbelievable week for DC Comics fans, and if you don’t know why… Well, then you’re probably in the right place.

But before we get to all the juicy, amazing details, we may as well just get this out of the way now.

Yes, the new Man of Steel trailer came on out Tuesday, and unless you’ve just arrived from another planet yourself, you’ve probably already seen it. But we figured it couldn’t hurt to see it again. And again and again and again.

You get the point.

But that was hardly the only huge item of comic geek awesomeness to drop this week. (Uh… Yeah, that term we WON’T be patenting.) Tuesday also saw the release of Injustice: Gods Among Us, the eagerly anticipated new fighting game from the fine folks at NetherRealm (who know a thing or two about fighting games).

Of course, we’ve been spreading the good word about Injustice for quite a while here at DCComics.com, and we weren’t about to stop now. In addition to posting the game’s official launch trailer, we also added the game’s first music video (featuring the song “THISKIDSNOTALRIGHT” by AWOLNATION) and ran a Q & A feature with several of the bands involved with the game’s soundtrack. After that, we spoke with part of the creative team behind the bestselling Injustice: Gods Among Us comic book, and shared this slick stop-motion video by the DC Collectibles team featuring two of their Injustice action figures…in action! Finally, we wrapped things up today with this exclusive new fight trailer starring Harley Quinn and Catwoman, Arkham Asylum and a pair of costumes that’ll be immediately familiar to fans of DC’s video games.

Oh, and then there was the matter of this week’s Injustice Battle Arena. Originally, the winner was going to be revealed in a live finale that was scheduled for Monday night. But out of respect to the events in Boston that day, the event was recorded, but rescheduled for another day. It went up on the Injustice Facebook page on Wednesday, but if you haven’t yet seen it, you can see all three parts of the Battle Arena finale below.

Meanwhile, fans of DC’s animated movies also had much to celebrate this week, starting with this new clip from the upcoming Superman: Unbound, offering us our first extended look at John Noble’s Brainiac. But that was just the beginning in animated movie news, as we also officially announced Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox, which will follow Superman: Unbound later this summer.

Also on the animated front, we continued our roll-out of the DC Nation Season 1 shorts here on DC Comics.com. This week we added Superman of Tokyo, New Teen Titans, Vibe, Sword of the Atom and Thunder & Lightning to the site. This is your chance to watch these awesome and oftentimes experimental DC Comics shorts in full, all in one place, so be sure to check them out!

So let’s see, we’ve discussed movies, video games, animation, TV… What’s missing?

Oh come on, you know we wouldn’t forget comics. Not this week. And man, did we have a lot going on. This week marked the debut of “What’s New in The New 52,” Bob Harras’s new column here in the DC Comics Fan Blog. The DC Comics Editor-in-Chief started things off by discussing Constantine and giving us an early look at Papa Midnight. He followed that up with a sketch of the Joker’s daughter (or is she?) before capping off the week with a peek at the new Green Lantern villain, Relic.

Harras chose to focus on what’s ahead, but have you seen what’s happening this very month in the pages of your favorite DC titles? Wowza! No wonder this whole month is keeping us on edge. Which, consequentially, is the subject of this week’s “5.2 Reasons” column.

Yesterday, we also heard from Brian Buccellato and Francis Manapul—aka our fearless Flash creative team—on their upcoming story arc, featuring Reverse-Flash. Even better, they gave us a sneak peek at some gorgeous new art. Have you seen it? Well, you really should wait when it comes to the Flash, so click here to check it all out.

And speaking of the Flash family, Kid Flash played a key role in this week’s JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA’S VIBE #3. But it’s the last page of that comic that plays a key role in this week’s “This Just Happened.” Click here to see it, but only if you’ve already read the new issue…or just love having things spoiled for you.

That’ll do it for this week, and that’s a good thing. We’re not sure we could handle any more DC Comics awesomeness. Well, okay, maybe that’s not entirely true. Who’s up for some Injustice?

We’ll see you again in seven!

DC Week-In-Review: April 12th

You’ve probably noticed that we’re more than a little excited about Injustice: Gods Among Us dropping next week. As fans of DC Comics and fighting games, this is like a dream that’s come true and taken us out for ice cream. Right now, there’s little that’s exciting us more than the chance to finally sit down and play the game.

Or rather, that was the case until this week came around.

Oh man, this week! We started with group solicits, made two major announcements, and posted more videos to DCComics.com than we have in the past four weeks combined. Three of them even had Plastic Man in them!

And since we know it’s pretty hard for anything else to compete with original Plastic Man shorts, why don’t we just save some time and make this easy for all of us?

Plastic Man Short #1

Plastic Man Short #2

Plastic Man Short #3

And that’s this week’s Week-In-Review! We’ll see you again in seven!

...Okay, okay, we’re kidding. Awesome as he is, there was a lot more to this week than Plastic Man.

Why, group solicits for one. We started off looking ahead to what’s hitting shops in July, and boy, oh boy… it’s going to be a great month.

Justice League

Batman

Superman

Green Lantern

The Dark

The Edge

Young Justice

Beyond DC Comics – The New 52

Collected Editions

DC Collectibles

Vertigo

But before you get lost in all those amazing covers and enticing descriptions, may we remind you that after ten weeks of crazy competition, we’ve finally reached the Injustice Battle Arena finals. And finalists don’t get any bigger than Superman and Batman.

Yes, on Monday we announced our final fight before talking to some smartly geeky people about the likely outcome. People like Ed Boon, the Creative Director of NetherRealm Studios. Or like Wil Wheaton and his posse of writer/producer/actor friends. Or like…well, everyone in this video. Of course, if you’re looking for the results of our final match-up, you’ll have to wait till Monday. That’s when we’ll be crowning the Battle Arena Champion in an exciting live event!

But wait, Injustice fans… There’s more!

We also counted down the 5.2 Reasons we’re excited for the game. And we debuted the latest character trailer, which features Hal Jordan struggling with himself. (And we’re not talking about internally.) This trailer may have flown a bit under the radar amongst all of the Battle Arena excitement, but make sure you check it out. It’s one of the best ones yet.

Yes, it’s been an amazing week for fans of DC video games. Battle Arena has gotten us excited about Injustice, which is just around the corner. But on Tuesday we announced Arkham Origins, the thrilling prequel to Arkham Asylum and Arkham City, and now we’re excited about what’s awaiting us after summer. Like really excited. Like “right on the brink of doing something insane in hope of getting thrown into Arkham before remembering that it’s a fictional place that doesn’t really exist” sort of excited.

And that was only one of our big announcements this week. We also announced “Trinity War,” a huge crossover event involving all three Justice League titles and written by Geoff Johns and Jeff Lemire. Okay, technically we announced this storyline in last year’s Free Comic Book Day offering, but this is the first time we’ve talked about what it is. And man, that triptych cover is unbelievable!

After that, we went right on and unveiled the latest edition of Caption This! from DC Collectibles. (Apparently, surfs up in Metropolis.)

On Thursday, we began debuting the Season 1 DC Nation shorts right here on DCComics.com. We started off with the aforementioned Plastic Man shorts, and then moved on to DC Nation’s Farm League, which went up today. We’ll be adding a new series each weekday until the debut of DC Nation’s second season on April 27th, so look for our next one on Monday. If you haven’t seen these, you’re going to want to. They’re fun, alternative takes on DC characters and ideas. Some are funny, some are exciting and some are just plain crazy. However, all of them are worth a minute (two minutes, tops) of your time.

Finally, we ended the week like we do around here—by spoiling one of this week’s comics. So what did you think of BATMAN AND RED ROBIN #19? And how awesome is it to see Carrie Kelley in DC COMICS – THE NEW 52? Of course, if you’ve read the issue, you know she’s only a part of it. If you’re curious about the rest of the story, click here. But watch out for spoilers!

Yeah, plenty going on this week, and next week’s shaping up to be a good one as well. On Monday night, we have the live Injustice Battle Arena finale, and that’s just the start of the great Injustice stuff we’ll have happening here on the DC Comics site. In fact, look for cool new features on the game, comic, action figures and more every day next week. And we may even have a few copies to give away…

We’ll see you again in seven, fight fans!

DC Week-In-Review: April 5th

If we were a roll of a certain popular, circle-shaped hard candy rather than a comic book publisher, we’d be one of the multi-flavored ones. At least this week. (And yes, we do spend our lunch break thinking up analogies like that. What of it?) We started the week off with a laugh and a wink before getting very serious for a moment. Of course, that’s until we found ourselves becoming quite excited about things just over the horizon.

Yes, we take April Foolery pretty darn seriously around here, and we weren’t about to let the first of the month pass us by without having a little fun with it. If you visited DCComics.com that day, you were treated to a slide suggesting we had revealed the newest Robin over the weekend at WonderCon. Of course, anyone who found that news to be worrisome really couldn’t have been farther off the mark, as the post you were taken to quickly revealed.

However, that was just the beginning of our fooling around that day. We also offered up some great joke ideas to play on a few of your favorite super heroes and villains. However, the real joke could be found in our “newly updated” character bios for Batman and Superman, and we didn’t come clean about it until the following day. It’s not surprising that we decided to have some fun with the fact that Mrs. Wayne and Mrs. Kent both have the same first name. What is surprising is how many of you thought our little joke would be a great idea for a real story twist!

On April 2nd, we debuted a new Batman-themed crowdfunding campaign to benefit We Can Be Heroes. It launched us into the second year of the campaign, and is just the start of a series of initiatives designed to help us fight the hunger crisis in the Horn of Africa. Now, if you’ve seen some of the perks you can earn for donating, you’ll know there are plenty of reasons to support the campaign, but we thought we’d list out 5.2 of them for you anyhow this week. And if your kids are wondering what they can do to help out, well, we’ve got you covered there as well.

Speaking of kids, if you have any young girls—or snowboarding enthusiasts—in your home, you may want to let them know about the Supergirl Snow Pro this weekend.

And if they’re old enough to have a Pinterest page, you may also want to let them know that DC Comics is now on Pinterest. That is, after you’ve started following us yourself.

Moving on in the week, we announced our exciting C2E2 lineup. Yes, we know it feels like we just finished up with WonderCon. That’s because we just did.

Let’s give a very respectful, dignified and proper round of applause to Saucer Country and to Amanda Conner, who have been nominated for Hugo and Reuben Awards respectively. These are serious awards, so they deserve serious applause.

Of course, there’s nothing serious about DC Collectibles’ new high-end custom MAD prints. Except for how awesome they are.

And on the subject of DC Collectibles, did you see the sweet trailer they debuted for their new Superman and Wonder Woman: “The Kiss” statue? We suspect that if you buy it for the special person in your life, you may earn a few amazing kisses yourself.

As we reached the end of the week, we announced a new wave of Annuals hitting shops in July. Any Animal Man fans who were hoping to see Travel Foreman take on Buddy Baker again are going to be pretty happy…

Of course, any Batwing reader who hasn’t read this week’s BATWING #19 yet is probably NOT going to be very happy if they click this link. That’s because it leads to today’s This Just Happened column, which spoils the issue’s big twist.

Finally, as good a week as this was, it closed on a sad note when we learned of the passing of beloved comic book artist and one-time DC Comics Publisher Carmine Infantino, who died on Thursday. Among other things, Carmine was responsible for redesigning the Flash, creating the Scarlet Speedster that comic book fans know today. We shared a few thoughts on Carmine’s passing and legacy here at DC Comics and in the industry as a whole, and of course offer our deepest condolences to his family and friends.

Yes, many flavors this week, some sweet and some somber. And we can expect even more next week. We’ll see you again in seven to discuss it!

DC Week-In-Review: March 22nd

POW! SMASH! WHACK! THUMP!

Oh sorry, this keyboard doesn’t seem to work unless you really slam the keys. We’ll try to type a little quieter.

It’s time for another DC Week-In-Review, Bat-fans! And by now you’ve no doubt noticed that we spent much of this week partying like it was 1966, what with all of the great news and products breaking this week about the classic Batman TV show. But we’ll get to those in a moment.

First, let’s take a look at some upcoming DC Comics covers. The whole covers. Yes, we’ve been unveiling April’s gatefold covers in their full, unfolded glory, and man, some of them are shocking. They’re also pretty darn beautiful. Don’t believe us? You can check out all of the ones we’ve revealed so far right here. Man, we’re still speechless over that Batman and Robin gatefold.

Oh wait… We haven’t revealed that one yet. Sorry. (But wait till you see it!)

Masters of the Universe fans! The first issue of He-Man’s new monthly ongoing kicks off in a few weeks. By now, you’ve surely seen the variant cover, right? No, not this variant cover. This one. Yeah, it’s fun! But you’ll have to subscribe to the series to get it.

And speaking of Masters of the Universe, we also gave you your first look at the new issue. That Pop Mhan must be powered by Grayskull or something.

Wednesday brought with it a new edition of Ask DC Collectibles—this time all about the new Injustice: Gods Among Us line of action figures! They’re 3 3/4” which means you can now have Deathstroke take on that silent, sword-wielding ninja from that other popular franchise. You know you’ve been dreaming of it!

As for us, we’ve been dreaming of owning our very own super-pet one day. Now, thanks to our brand new Super-Pet Selector Quiz, we know exactly which one we’ll pick. But that’s not what matters. This column is for you, the fans. So do YOU know which costume clad critter is perfect for you? You don’t!?! Then take the quiz and find out!

Now, on to some talent interviews. Brian Azzarello has been killing it on Wonder Woman. Seriously, we love this series, and we love the guy writing it. And we especially love hearing him talk about the series, like he does here. Of course, we’re also pretty keen on Kyle Higgins so we’d call his thoughts on Nightwing’s current relocation a must read as well.

Do you have a spouse? Kids? Parents? Dog? Do you live in what could be called a household? How’d you like to be the hero of it? Because if you win this awesome prize package, that’s exactly what your family will call you. (And psst! You don’t need to have a full household to win. This stuff looks just as great in a studio apartment in Toledo.)

Time to dust of the spoiler alert now because we had TWO separate This Just Happened posts hit the blog today. The first takes a look at Wonder Woman #18 (we told you we love it) and that issue’s family reunion. After that, we posted this look at Justice League #18 and its roster of candidates vying for the Justice League. Who’s going to make the cut? We don’t know, but one thing’s for sure—the League’s a-changing!

Harley Quinn’s quickly becoming a favorite character in both the Injustice game and comic series. The latest Injustice character trailer gives us a glimpse of her storyline—time to switch the relationship status to “It’s Complicated”—and a sweet, sweet surprise cameo by the Scarecrow.

Okay, time to hold the Bat-phone and stock up on shark repellent, the Batman Classic TV Series is coming back in a big way. First, we listed off the 5.2 reasons it’s the right time to dig the show.

After that, we gave you a glimpse at last night’s very exclusive Batman Classic event. Holy Adam West, Batman! And in doing so, we also broke the news about our upcoming Batman ’66 digital first comic, which is set in the universe of the show. Groovy!

Don’t know about you, but we can’t wait to see some bell-bottom clad butt-kicking. (Yes, yes, we know that Batman doesn’t wear bell-bottoms on the show and likely won’t in the comic. But a fan can dream!)

That’s it for this week’s review. Join us again next week for a new column. Same bat-time, same bat—er, we mean… We’ll see you again in seven.

DC Week-In-Review: March 15th

Unless you happen to be a scarlet-clad, single-syllable super hero, it can be really difficult to keep up with all of the great news and features to hit DCComics.com sometimes. Sure, most of it can be found right here in the blog, but there’s the video section as well. Have you visited it lately? The video section’s a pretty happening place these days, and it’s only gotten...er…happeninger since the start of Injustice Battle Arena. Why, this week alone we posted a dozen Battle Arena clips starring the likes of Kevin Smith, Jace Hall and one Mr. Stan Lee. (Maybe you’ve heard of him?)

But let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves. We’ll break down the Battle Arena in a moment, but first let’s take a look at the rest of what went down this week on the DC Comics website…

We started things out with our June group solicits, which featured several brand new, eagerly anticipated new titles. Titles like Superman Unchained, Batman/Superman and Trinity of Sin: Pandora (which you’ve gotta admit, sounds a little like a metal album). Of course, that’s just the start of what’s on tap for June. Check it out!

Justice League

Superman

Batman

Green Lantern

The Dark

The Edge

Young Justice

Beyond DC Comics – The New 52

Collected Editions

DC Collectibles

And…Vertigo

Ah, Lono, how we have missed you.

We’ve also really been missing the Teen Titans whenever we turn on our TVs on Saturday mornings. So needless to say, we were pretty darn excited when we learned that Teen Titans Go! will be coming to Cartoon Network in April.

And speaking of comedy…you DC fans are some really funny folks. You know that? If you have any doubt, just read a few of the captions you came up with for the latest edition of Caption This!.

Who’s in the mood for a first look? Well, okay, if you haven’t seen it by now, it’s safe to say that you’re not getting the first look at it. Maybe you can still be in the first couple thousand, though. Hey, all that really matters is that you check out these awesome pages from the 19th issues of Batman, Batgirl and Batman And….

So we’ve been talking about the JLA a lot lately, but let’s not forget the JSA. Especially not when it’s been blowing our minds on a monthly basis in Earth 2.

Of course, we can’t discuss this week without at least mentioning the three “Requiem” titles that hit shops this month—namely BATMAN #18, BATMAN AND ROBIN #18 (a completely silent issue) and BATGIRL #18, which just happens to be the subject of this week’s This Just Happened. Man, remind us never to complain about our slacker brother again. Also, bigtime spoilers at that link, so consider yourself warned.

Okay, let’s talk Injustice Battle Arena! This week, the tournament entered the quarter final round, which means we were treated to not one, not two, but FOUR high profile match-ups. Superman vs. Green Arrow! Aquaman vs. Green Lantern! The Flash vs. the Joker! Batman vs. Wonder Woman! (Seriously, how can you pick between Batman and Wonder Woman—and if you have to, how can you possibly pick Batman? C’mon, the dude has no super powers!)

With matches this huge, we had to make sure our celebrity experts were up to the task. And when it comes to super heroes, it’s hard to find a bigger expert than Stan Lee. He offered his very decisive opinions while sparring with his buddy Jace Hall in a two part video. Of course, we all know Kevin Smith is a pretty big comic book man himself, so you should really give a listen to his thoughts on the match-ups too. And Brian Bloom, Steven Blum and Fred Tatasciore have all portrayed super heroes, so they really understand the heroic mindset. You may want to pay attention to what they have to say as well.

But ultimately, this round, like the ones before them, was decided by votes. Your votes. And who did you vote for? Watch all four fights and learn who’s moving on by clicking the links below:

Batman vs. Wonder Woman

The Flash vs. the Joker

Aquaman vs. Green Lantern

Superman vs. Green Arrow

So, what did we learn this week? We learned that all it takes to bring down Green Lantern is a single piranha (at least according to Jason Mewes). We learned that there are some awesome sounding comics coming out in June. Like ridiculously awesome. Like so awesome, the mere thought of them sets our brains a-quiver (which is kinda gross, so we’re going to stop thinking of them for a little bit). And we learned that Stan is still the Man!

That’s it for this review. Have a great weekend and we’ll see you again in seven!

DC Week-In-Review: March 1st

Ah…March 1st. The very first day of a new month. We have 31 days of lion and lamb greatness in front of us. Who knows what they may bring? We sure don’t. Even if we did, they haven’t happened yet, so we can’t exactly review them, can we? Knowing the future would have its advantages, but it doesn’t really help us with this column.

No, this weekly review of all things DC isn’t about the future. It’s about the amazing stuff that’s taken place over the past week. And let’s face it—this last week has been pretty darn amazing. Our emotions have run the gamut from sheer elation to shock and sadness. We’ve laughed, we’ve cried, we’ve commented angrily on the internet, but the important thing is that this week’s reminded us of how much we care about some of these characters. Whether we were celebrating them, or mourning their passing, we all agreed on one thing—good characters have the ability to move and motivate us.

Here’s what went down this week on the DC Comics website…

Let’s be frank. The conversation this week really centered around two topics. One joyful and fun, the other somber and shocking. Let’s start with happy, shall we?

On Monday, we announced Green Arrow Week, a five-day celebration of all things Ollie. We started things off with an interview with Geoff Johns on this week’s shocking episode of Arrow. This was followed up by a journey from script to screen with Geoff that included an exclusive first look at both his script and a key scene from the episode. After that, we gave you an in-depth look at the Arrow comic book series, and spoke with some of the people involved with it. We also gave you an early look at next week’s GREEN ARROW #18, from the slam dunk creative team of Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino.

Speaking of Mr. Lemire, he’s provided us with five awesome collector copies of GREEN ARROW #17 that each feature a unique original sketch by him as well as his signature. Want to get your hands on one? Well, here’s how to go about it. And after you’re done entering the giveaway, you may want to save some cash on some great Green Arrow apparel, action figures and pint glasses with our week-long Green Arrow Sale.

Finally, it’s impossible to talk about Arrow and Oliver Queen without thinking about his unbelievable abs. Heck, back when that shirtless ad started running, it was impossible to talk about anything without thinking about them. So in tribute to that sensational six-pack, we’re launching the Green Arrow Week Gut Check Challenge. We show you the abs, you guess who they belong to. And if you complete the quiz over the next 24 hours, you can even download a free Green Arrow comic.

Of course, you may have noticed that Green Arrow also stepped into the Injustice Battle Arena this week in our final round of preliminaries. He took on Hawkgirl in a battle of the sexes, while Superman squared off against Sinestro in a battle of super powerful space dudes. Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes offered their usual expert commentary, while Wayne Brady and Tara Strong discussed the Superman/Sinestro match-up and whether Kryptonite can be found at Whole Foods. So who won? Well, rather than telling you, why don’t we just show you the fights?

Superman vs. Sinestro

Green Arrow vs. Hawkgirl

Okay, on to this week’s second, more somber subject. The death of Damian Wayne. At this point, whether you’ve read BATMAN, INCORPORATED #8 or not, you know the big twist. After all, the New York Post announced it on Monday. The death of Batman’s son was something that Grant Morrison had planned from the very beginning. Earlier this week, he offered us a few thoughts on this, as well as on leaving Batman after nearly seven years of writing the character. We shared our reaction to the issue, and other recent Bat-comics, in this week’s 5.2 Reasons column, while Buzzfeed shared the DC Universe’s reaction to Damian’s untimely demise. Finally, if you haven’t read the issue yet and want to see the shocking moment for yourself, check out this week’s This Just Happened.

Man, heavy stuff. Fortunately, we have one last bit of positive news to end on. If you watched the Oscars last Sunday, you saw Django Unchained take home the award for Best Original Screenplay (and Christoph Waltz win for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Dr. Dwight Schultz). We wanted to offer up our hearty congratulations to Quentin Tarantino and everyone else involved with the production for their Oscar wins. We’re proud to be able to bring such a distinctly original story to comics.

Whether you spent the week wearing green or black, you can’t deny it was a memorable one. Thanks for reviewing it with us and we’ll see you again in seven!

DC Week-In-Review: February 22nd

We’ve reached the end of the week, DC fans, and you know what that means—it’s time to go right back to the start and live it all over again! No, you haven’t found yourself in a classic (if slightly repetitive) Bill Murray movie. You’re in the Week-In-Review, and if you’ve never been here before, be ready for some real treats! Granted, they’re all treats that have already been served up here on DCComics.com, but they’re still pretty darn tasty, and you don’t even have to microwave them. In fact, you shouldn’t microwave them. That would involve microwaving your computer, and that’s a great way to blow up your kitchen and turn this week from a really good seven days into an insurance nightmare.

No, to enjoy the Week-In-Review, all you need to do is sit back, relax and read on. Here’s what went down this week on the DC Comics website…

Monday was a holiday, but if you thought that meant we’d be giving our Battle Arena fighters a day off, you don’t know us very well, do you? The Injustice Battle Arena entered its third week with a fight pitting the C-man against the Sea Man and a skirmish between a couple of dudes who are always saying the same words over and over. As usual, your votes determine the winner, but savvy fans know that it’s worth listening to our panels of celebrity experts before voting. Like Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes. Or Tara Strong and Wayne Brady. Or Hart of Dixie’s Scott Porter. All of them have shared their thoughts on this week’s match-ups (and in some cases, the serious problem of dolphin bullying).

Of course, none of it changes the fact that there can only be two winners each week. So, who’s moving on? Well, click below to see the fights!

Aquaman vs. Cyborg

Green Lantern vs. Solomon Grundy

Looks like it was a good week for Green Lantern in general, as we then went on to announce the new Green Lantern creative teams. Yes, plural. As many fans know, every Green Lantern title is getting a new creative team in June. But did you know that we were also getting a new Lantern title? Well, you do now!

Also announced was the news that award winning book designer Chip Kidd would be designing the covers to the Before Watchmen deluxe editions. When their books are designed by a talented guy like Kidd, who wouldn’t want to watch the Watchmen?

Wednesday means new comics and new DCComics.com content from DC Collectibles. This week in the spotlight…Caption This! We give you a photo, you give us your most hilarity-rich caption, and all of us have a grand old time. Except for maybe Nightwing. He looks a little bored.

We’re not sure what he has to be bored about, though. After all, you just elected him as DC Comics’ Most Dateable Male Super Hero. How can you be bored when just about everyone reading DC comics wants to date you? So who was our most Most Dateable Female Super Hero? Well, click here and find out!

On Thursday, we posted the latest edition of 5.2 Reasons, which focused on the three newest titles to join DC COMICS – THE NEW 52. So have you read Justice League of America, Katana and Vibe? If you are, you’re probably excited for more, and while we can’t give that to you—yet—we suggest curbing your appetite by reading the column. Still hungry? Then maybe you should read what Geoff Johns and David Finch had to say about issue #1.

And if you’re still hungry after that, you should probably go get a burger or something.

Also on Thursday, we announced the new Batman/Superman title, which teams up not only two of our biggest super heroes, but also two pretty amazing creators—Greg Pak and Jae Lee.

Finally, Friday means a new installment of This Just Happened. If you’ve read either of this week’s debut comics, you know that Vibe is a sonic-based superhero. But that sound you’re hearing right now isn’t Vibe. It’s the sound of fans cranky with us for ruining the last page of JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA’S VIBE #1. So click that link and join the chorus.

With that, we’ve reached the weekend and the end of this DC Week-In-Review. Be sure to be back on Monday for more great stuff from DC Comics and the final round of Injustice Battle Arena preliminaries. That’s right, the final four Battle Arena fighters will be revealed on Monday. Any thoughts on who they’ll be?

Take your guesses down below, and we’ll see you again in seven!

DC Week-In-Review: February 15th

Can’t speak for the rest of you, but we’re feeling a little woozy after eating all of those candy hearts yesterday. You know, the ones that have cute little romantic messages. We’ve never been entirely sure about those things. Are you supposed to give them all to your sweetheart? Because we can’t imagine they’d be thrilled about all of those empty calories. Or are you supposed to share them with everyone? You do that and you run the risk of seeming like some sort of candy Casanova, or just a person who can’t make up their mind. Or are you supposed to eat them all yourself? Because then it seems like you’re telling yourself how good looking and awesome you are over and over again.

None of which has ANYTHING to do with the Week-In-Review. Just with how woozy we’re feeling, and how candy hearts are weird. So let’s drop them as a topic in favor of a few things that doesn’t try winning our affection with flirty notes of endearment (at least not where we buy them)—comic books, videogames, collectibles and other fun things!

Here’s what went down this week on the DC Comics website…

Things got started off right this week with our group solicits for May, which included a couple intriguing new ongoing titles in “The Edge” family of books. Check them out along with all of our other May group solicits below.

Justice League

Batman

Superman

The Dark

The Edge

Young Justice

Beyond DC Comics – The New 52

Collected Editions

DC Collectibles

Let’s see, we’re forgetting something here, aren’t we. That’s right…

Green Lantern

And you may notice something about the comics in our Green Lantern group. Every writer is wrapping up their run with the May issue. That means you can look for an exciting announcement about our new Green Lantern creative teams soon. Like very soon…

Unfortunately, that also means that it’s time to say goodbye to some of the most phenomenal writers to ever play in the Lanternverse. Mr. Tomasi, Mr. Milligan, Mr. Bedard, we’ll miss you. And Mr. Johns, we don’t even know where to begin! A landmark, decade-long run is about to come to a close. Geoff shared a few thoughts about leaving Green Lantern on Monday, and if you’re a fan of his work or of Green Lantern, you should really check it out.

Along with group solicits, Monday kicked off a new week of Injustice Battle Arena. This time around, the Flash faced off against SHAZAM! while the Joker got serious with Lex Luthor. Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes offered their thoughts. So did Tara Strong and Wayne Brady. But of course, it’s the number of votes each fighter receives that determines it, and if you’re wondering who took the trophy, you’ll have to watch today’s victory videos:

The Flash vs. SHAZAM!

The Joker vs. Lex Luthor

By the way, the fight between the Flash and SHAZAM! was really close. Really close. As in, your vote definitely DID make a difference. Still, upset about how things turned out? Well, we think this week’s new Aquaman Injustice trailer will cheer you up. Why? Oh…only because it’s one of the best Injustice trailers released so far! Check it out, if you haven’t already.

As we got closer to Wednesday, we turned the spotlight to a few of our talented creators. First, we spoke to Ray Fawkes about next month’s CONSTANTINE #1, and served up a five-page preview. Then we asked Scott Snyder to talk about this week’s conclusion of “Death of the Family.” So…who won? Batman or the Joker? The answer, you’ll see, is not so simple…

Also on Wednesday, we posted an exclusive video that gave us all a look at many of the exciting new statues and actions figures from DC Collectibles that were on display at Toy Fair.

Thursday was Valentine’s Day, and we were certainly struck by the arrow here on DCComics.com (though whether it was fired by Cupid or Oliver Queen, we’re not entirely sure). We started things off by firing off 5.2 Reasons you should spend your February 14th with DC Entertainment. And maybe your sweetheart. But definitely DC.

We also kicked off a new poll asking you to choose the most dateable male and female DC super heroes. The voting’s still going on, so if you haven’t taken the poll yet, you still can.

And speaking of dating super heroes, we thought it was also a good idea to give you a few tips on how to go about it. Just in case you happen to find any super heroes on OK Cupid.

We also gave you a good look at “Superman & Wonder Woman: The Kiss,” a beautifully, romantic new statue coming from DC Collectibles that was first unveiled at Toy Fair. Finally, we posted all of the DC COMICS – THE NEW 52 Valentine’s Day cards which can be found inside YOUNG ROMANCE: THE NEW 52 VALENTINE’S DAY SPECIAL #1. So which one is your favorite?

Finally, we stumbled in a Sweet Hearts-fueled stupor into Friday, where we posted the latest edition of This Just Happened. So which comic did we spoil—er, promote this week? That would be KATANA #1.

It was a week full of comics, cuddling and very, very close super hero fights. Hope it was a good one for you, and we’ll see you again in seven for another DC Week-In-Review.
