DC Week-In-Review: February 8th

Adrenalyzed, out of breath and more than a little bruised. That’s likely how Batman, Bane, Wonder Woman and Harley Quinn feel after the first week of Injustice Battle Arena…but that could just as easily apply to us after trying to stay on top of all the DC Comics awesomeness this week. Why, in the past five days we’ve seen the launch of a massive new super hero tournament, a trailer for a new DC Animated Movie, an exciting new creative team make their debut on Green Arrow, the shocking finale of “Rotworld,” a slew of awesome new DC Collectibles that will be on display at Toy Fair and a pretty darn good episode of Arrow to boot.

With so much going on, you’re bound to have missed something. So let’s see if we can recap everything that happened this week…without it taking us till next week to complete.

Here’s what went down this week on the DC Comics website…

We started things off by popping open a bottle of champagne and giving Aquaman a round of noogies to celebrate the Robot Chicken DC Comics Special’s win at this weekend’s Annie Awards. Congrats, guys!

After the excitement of last months Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 2, we got a great glimpse of DC’s next animated adventure with the trailer for Superman: Unbound. Man, with Unbound hitting shops in May and Man of Steel coming to theaters in June, it’s a great summer to be a Superman fan.

On Tuesday we kicked off the Injustice Battle Arena, a 10-week super hero smackdown tied in with the upcoming Injustice: Gods Among Us videogame. This week, Batman took on Bane and Wonder Woman faced Harley Quinn…and the results were entirely in your hands. If you’re a DC fan, Battle Arena’s been pretty hard to miss, but did you vote? Unfortunately, it’s too late to pick a winner in this week’s fights, but be sure to check in next Monday for our next two match-ups.

As for who won, first we suggest that you listen to Jay and Silent Bob discuss who they think would win, because, c'mon, it's Jay and Silent Bob. Then click here to see the Batman battle the Bane of his existence and click here to see Wonder Woman and Harley mix things up Injustice-style!

Injustice Battle Arena is just getting started, but unfortunately, Grant Morrison’s tenure as our Action Comics writer is soon coming to an end. To help us get ready for this month’s penultimate issue, he shared a few thoughts on his history with Superman as well as what we can expect from his final super-sized issue. We suggest reading the interviews linked above, then rewatching Grant discuss the Man of Steel in our Superman 101 video. Then try not to get a little misty-eyed.

Of course, at least we have a couple more issues of Morrison’s Action Comics to look forward to. “Rotworld” reached its end this Wednesday. If you haven’t read it, well, we’re not going to spoil the final two installments for you (we’ll leave that to This Just Happened). But we do suggest reading Scott Snyder and Jeff Lemire’s thoughts on the finale.

Thursday brought a new version of our 5.2 Reasons column, and yes, we did recommend checking out a comic that was just cancelled. And we still recommend it! Good comics are good comics, and if you’re looking for a different side of DC COMICS – THE NEW 52, we suggest reading Sword of Sorcery along with all of the other great titles we mention in “5.2 Reasons to Read DC Comics…Even if You Don’t Like Super Heroes.”

Also on Thursday, we revealed some of the new toys and collectibles from DC Collectibles that will be on display at next week’s Toy Fair. They come out later in 2013, but you can check out some standouts by clicking here.

Finally, the latest edition of B&B (as in Bob Harras and Bobbie Chase) came out on CBR. If you haven’t seen this great new column yet, it’s a must-read. This week’s installment discussed some new annuals, creative changes and cancellations.

At last, we rolled into Friday which gave us a new edition of This Just Happened. You’ve read Green Arrow #17 by now, haven’t you? Well, then you should have no fear of clicking here. (Otherwise, spoilers, spoilers, red alert, spoilers!)

Bam! We told you it was a big, burly week! Pow! We can’t wait to see what next week brings! Whammo! And remember to come back to check out this week’s Battle Arena winners! Pop! Crunch! Whump!

Okay, we’re gonna go ice our typing fingers. We’ll see you again in seven!

DC Week-In-Review: February 1st

This may be the DC Week-In-Review, but since we just wrapped up the first full month of 2013, it’s only natural to take a moment and consider some of the cool stuff we’ve seen since the start of the new year. In the past 31 days, we’ve began rolling out the second wave of DC COMICS – THE NEW 52 trade collection, starting with second volumes of Green Lantern, Animal Man, Wonder Woman, Green Arrow and Justice League. We’ve seen the return of Arrow, and the debut of villains like Firefly and Count Vertigo. We also launched a new DC Comics – The New 52 ongoing, the sci-fi anthology, Threshold. We watched and thrilled to the concluding chapter of the animated adaptation of Frank Miller’s THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS. And finally, we gained a little insight into the dark and compelling story we can expect from the upcoming Injustice: Gods Among Us videogame, both from the debut of the weekly digital first comic and the world premiere of the new trailer. But more on the last part in a moment.

Not bad for a first month, and truly, we’re just warming up. Next week, expect the site to explode with hard-hitting awesomeness! You’re going to want to come back here Monday for the start of something cool.

But enough about next week. Let’s talk about this one. Here’s what went down this week on the DC Comics website…

As we mentioned above, this week saw the release of the eagerly anticipated Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 2, the second part of the two-part animated adaptation. We marked the release by debuting two new Joker clips from the film. The first was this exclusive clip of the Joker knocking them dead on The Dave Endochrine Show, while the second gave us glimpse of the final showdown between the Clown Prince of Crime and his nemesis, the Batman.

After reading this week’s SUPERMAN #16 and AQUAMAN #16, we figured you might be hungry for more. Well, we’d hate to ruin your appetite for next month’s comics, but we couldn’t resist whetting your palate with first looks for SUPERMAN #17 and AQUAMAN #17.

Wednesday brought with it the return of Ask DC Collectibles, which this week included questions about Injustice figures, how run numbers are determined and what factors go into deciding which comics and characters get the DC Collectibles treatment.

That same day, we revealed the new WTF Certified logo over at Buzzfeed, while teasing some of what you can expect from your favorite DC comics in April.

However, probably the biggest buzz on Wednesday came from the release of the new Injustice: Gods Among Us trailer. It includes new shots of gameplay, did-you-see-them-or-didn’t-you glimpses of new characters and our first look at the game’s intriguing story.

This week, Ethan Van Sciver took over art duties on Batman: The Dark Knight, and to mark this “madly” momentous occasion, we listed off the 5.2 Reasons we love Mr. Van Sciver and his work.

Of course, it wouldn’t be Friday without another edition of This Just Happened, which we’re more than happy to bring you. However, you probably want to read Superman #16 before you read it…or forever hold your peace.

Finally, in celebration of Black History Month, we’ve discounted some great comics featuring some of your favorite African-American super heroes in the DC Digital Comics Store. We’ll be offering up new discounted titles every week in February, so be sure to check back regularly.

With that, we’ll wrap things up, but remember to check back on Monday as we kick off something fun, and we’ll see you again here in seven with another Week-In-Review!

DC Week-In-Review: January 25th

For a guy who went largely unseen for nearly a year, it seems like the Joker is suddenly running rampant in every corner of the DC Universe. He’s been causing all sorts of nightmares for Batman and his crew in “Death of the Family,” which is quickly approaching its shocking conclusion. He’s also been grabbing attention in animated form this week in Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 2, due to both the story’s psychotic take on the character as well as Michael Emerson’s chilling vocal work. Then there’s DC Collectibles’ brand new Joker bust, the Joker’s 70s-era self-titled series which we’ve now made available digitally, his appearance as a character in Injustice: Gods Among Us

In short, it’s safe to say that the Joker’s been seriously creeping out this week. Here’s what else when down this week on the DC Comics website…

Fans of DC’s acclaimed, awesome anthology series Legends of the Dark Knight got mighty excited when we revealed the creator list for the next exciting installments. When it includes names like Rafael Albuquerque (taking on both art and writing for the first time), Joshua Williamson and Peter Milligan, can you blame them?

Next month marks the start of a few new highly anticipated ongoings that will be joining the ranks of DC COMICS – THE NEW 52. While you may need to wait a few more weeks before you can snatch them up, you can certainly tide yourself over by reading what the writers have in store for readers. First, Geoff Johns shared his thoughts on the Justice League of America, and what he finds so exciting about writing their brand new book. Then, comic book writer and Arrow executive producer Andrew Kreisberg discussed his latest project, Justice League of America’s Vibe.

Wednesday brought us the return of Caption This!, our monthly DC Collectibles captioning contest. This week featured Batman from the new Batman: The Dark Knight Returns Action Figure 4-Pack. And a kite.

Actually, BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS was all over DCComics.com this week, largely due to the upcoming release of Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 2, the highly anticipated second half of Warner Home Video, DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. Animation’s animated adaptation of Frank Miller’s graphic novel.

In Thursday’s 5.2 Reasons column, we listed off the reasons why this second part is so successful and fun. We also added a new clip from the film—the first one to feature the Joker—that boasts an exclusive introduction by Michael Emerson. Emerson also shared some thoughts on playing twisted characters, while Peter Weller let us know how he feels about playing super heroes. His answer just may surprise you.

(And psst! We have some more interview segments and one final, fully exclusive clip coming on Monday, so be sure to check back!)

Finally, we got to Friday and this week’s This Just Happened. Our focus this time around was on JUSTICE LEAGUE #16, and the geektastic final page. What final page, you ask? Well, if you’re curious, click here. But beware of spoilers.

Not bad for a single shortened week, eh? Look for some exciting stuff next week. Seriously, exciting. And the weeks after that… Whoa, whoa, nelly!

We’ll see you again in seven!

DC Week-In-Review: January 18th

Maybe it’s because everyone’s excited about the new year, or perhaps people have finally gotten tired of playing with their new holiday toys, but it sure seems like there was a lot of talking taking place on and around DCComics.com this week. People were talking about our latest solicits, and wondering what may be on the other half of those gatefold covers. Creators were talking about their most recent projects and what we can expect. Arrow fans were talking about the show’s return and how long it’ll take Ollie to get back into full fighting shape. Gamers were talking about the release of Injustice: Gods Among Us, which finally got a street date. Science fiction fans were talking about Threshold, our new sci-fi comic, and Larfleeze was talking about…uh, himself.

With all that talking going on, it’s easy to miss something. That’s why we run this little review column every week. So why don’t we stop talking and get to it?

Here’s what went down this week on the DC Comics website…

The week got started in a big way with the release of our April group solicits, which arrived with the news that all of our DC COMICS – THE NEW 52 titles that month will have gatefold covers that reveal a very secret, very shocking event from that issue. (Does that mean that for once, it’s okay to judge a book by its cover?)

The April group solicits are…

Justice League

Superman

Batman

Green Lantern

The Dark

The Edge

Young Justice

Beyond DC Comics – The New 52

DC Collectibles

And of course… Vertigo

While we’re on the subject of Vertigo, have you seen Django Unchained yet? Well, are you also reading the comic? Because unless you are, you’re not getting the whole story, as evidenced by this article pointing out a few scenes in issue #1 that didn’t make it onscreen.

After that, we went from talking about our comics to…letting our talent do it! Jeff Lemire let us know what to expect from Constantine, one of the newest titles to join The New 52. We also heard from Ann Nocenti on soon-to-debut Katana. Scott Snyder discussed what the end of “Death of the Family” will mean for Batman and his family of titles. And finally, DC Comics Editor-in-Chief Bob Harras joined DC Comics Editorial Director Bobbie Chase for the inaugural edition of “B&B” a new monthly column that promises plenty of DC news and announcements from two of the folks making those announcements happen!

Speaking of announcements, did you read the one about the brand new, digital first Injustice comic book? The first issue is now available, and at 99 cents, it’s hard to beat.

You know what’s also hard to beat? Batman. Especially when he has an entire army at his disposal. Check out the most recent clip from Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 2, introduced by the voice of Batman himself, Peter Weller!

On Wednesday we learned that two of our titles, Batwoman and Earth 2, have been nominated for GLAAD Media Awards. Congrats to all involved!

We also released a fun new trailer for DC Collectibles’ upcoming Green Lantern Power Battery replica. Since sitting at home and hoping you’ll be chosen as a Lantern is such an unreliable way of getting a power ring and battery.

Whether you’re a regular viewer or new to the show, you’ll definitely want to catch next week’s DC-themed episode of Syfy’s Face Off. It features a dream team of DC talent and the winning creation will appear in an issue of Justice League Dark!

On Thursday, we broke down the 5.2 Reasons it’s a Great Time to be a Green Arrow Fan. And if you’re a fan of the Emerald Archer, you’ll want to “like” our brand new Green Arrow Facebook page. It launched this week and promises all the latest news about all versions of Oliver.

Finally, we wrapped things up today by spoiling the ending of THRESHOLD #1 for you. (That’s kinda what we do in This Just Happened. So don’t click the link unless you’re cool with it.) Poor Larfleeze. We almost feel bad for the guy. Almost.

That’s it for this week, and none too soon. It’s getting late and we have some serious weekending to do. Have a great three-day, everyone, and we’ll see you again in seven!

DC Week-In-Review: January 11th

Happy New Year, everyone!

Okay, perhaps we’re a bit tardy with our good tidings, but the year is still fairly new, and if you’re a DC fan, you were probably pretty happy this week. So heck, late or not, it still makes sense—happy New Year! We hope you’re all set for an exciting new year full of great comics, movies, TV, animation, games and collectibles, all starring your favorite heroes and villains. Oh, and a year full of Weeks-In-Review as well, because we know that’s really what you’re here for.

…Anybody? Hello?

All right, so maybe you don’t come to DCComics.com just to read the Week-In-Review. We’ll still be here throughout the year ahead to help you stay on top of the breaking news, exciting stories and cool new features here on the site. Trust us, with how much we have planned for the year, you just may need us.

Here’s what went down this week on the DC Comics website…

We started things off with an exhilarating new glimpse of Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 2, the latest DC Universe Animated Original Movie. We’d imagine that by now, Batman fans have not only seen the clip but likely slowed it down and savored it frame-by-glorious-frame, but if you managed to miss it, you can check out the clip right here.

Next month, Green Arrow’s ongoing series gets some fresh blood as the excellent new creative team of Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino take over. On Wednesday, Lemire discussed some of the challenges that came with the new gig, as well as offered up a tantalizing tease of Ollie’s latest nemesis, Komodo. Check out what he had to say here.

Also on Wednesday, the DC Collectibles crew launched a new edition of Spoiler Alert. This one’s extra-tough, and so far, no one seems to have gotten it. Think you’ll be the one to figure it out? Well, check out the first image and take your best guess. Then keep an eye on the DC Collectibles Facebook page over the weekend for more Spoiler Alert images.

It’s been a very big week for Django Unchained. Yesterday we learned that the film racked up some pretty big Oscar nominations, and on Sunday, we’ll see if it walks away with any Golden Globes. (Fingers crossed!) But the movie’s not the only version of Django that’s been doing well. The first issue of Vertigo’s comic book adaptation has sold out and a second printing is on the way. And did you know that the story is being adapted to comics by Reggie Hudlin, one of the producers of the film? He’s been talking to some of the biggest comic book sites around about the Django comic, and we have a roundup of some of those links right here. Finally, be sure to check out this short clip of Reggie talking about the comic with a comic book fan who also knows a few things about the movie—Mr. Samuel L. Jackson!

On Thursday our minds all went to rot, as did our website, as we broke down the 5.2 reasons we should all venture into Rotworld. You just might not want to do it too late at night…

Earth 2 took a turn for the wicked this week with a story that focused on the villainous Steppenwolf. There were shocks a-plenty to be found within its 20 pages, but the biggest of all may have been his partner-in-conquest. Click here to learn who it was, and other secrets of this high-stakes issue in this week’s This Just Happened.

Finally, we thought the best way to get everyone pumped for the start of an exciting new year of DC comics was to look at some of the best moments in last year’s comics. We’ve selected a dozen truly jaw-dropping moments and compiled them into a two-part feature that we’re calling “12 ‘Holy Smoke!’ Moments in Comics From 2012.” You can check out the first part by clicking here, and the second part by clicking right here. Don’t forget, if you missed out on any of them, you can still buy or download the issue. After all, how else are you going to get ready for an even-more-thrilling 2013.

But right now, we need to get ready for a thrilling weekend. Cleaning out your mother-in-law’s attic is totally thrilling…right? Well, either way, we hope you have a great two days and we’ll see you in seven.

DC Week-In-Review: December 14th

There are only two more weeks left in 2012, and we’re making all of them count. Whether it’s in the pages of our comics, with high-stakes storylines like “Death of the Family,” on big and small screens nationwide or even here on DCComics.com, we’re doing what we can to wrap up the year in fine fan fashion. Why, just this week we saw the Joker square off with Damian Wayne in the pages of Batman and Robin, a brand new Man of Steel trailer hit movie theaters and the web, Arrow take some truly dramatic twists and the unveiling of the first moment in our 2012 Hall of Fame. And that’s to say nothing about our most recent group solicits, which were also released this week.

Here’s some of what went down this week on the DC Comics website…

Let’s start with those solicits. March solicitations were released on Monday, and there’s plenty of great stuff to look forward to, starting with the very first issue of Constantine, the latest title to join DC COMICS – THE NEW 52. But that’s only one title of…well, 52. (Actually, more than 52 when you include the Beyond DC Comics – The New 52 group.)

Click below to be taken to the listings:

Justice League

Superman

Batman

Green Lantern

The Edge

The Dark

Young Justice

Beyond DC Comics – The New 52

Collected Editions

DC Collectibles

Yes, we included DC Collectibles this time. With some of the amazing statues they have in the pipeline, how could we not? And speaking of fun things from the DC Collectibles crew, did you see this week’s edition of Caption This?

“Death of the Family” continued this week in a big way as the tense, terrifying storyline continued. Along with new chapters in Batman, Batgirl and Suicide Squad, it also exploded into the pages of Batman and Robin for the first time. It doesn’t show any sign of winding down either. Next week, the Joker will find himself going head to head with Nightwing, and series writer Kyle Higgins offered some tantalizing hints about what to expect.

On Tuesday, we gave you a glimpse the cover for January’s THRESHOLD #1, courtesy of Howard Porter.

Of course, most of you spent that particular day in front of your computer screens, absorbing the brand new Man of Steel trailer that was released and debating whether we’re ready for a hero like Superman. So what do you think?

Wednesday brought us the last episode of Arrow for the year. (We guess even vigilantes are entitled to some time off for the holidays.) While the wait for the show’s January return may be tough, at least we can keep ourselves busy discussing the episode’s important revelations. What revelations, you ask? Well, if you don’t know that, then clearly you need to watch the episode.

On Thursday, we presented the 5.2 Reasons Before Watchmen is turning Christmas into Easter. It has to do with eggs…and Martin Scorsese.

Today brought with it a new edition of This Just Happened, where we discussed the intriguing last page of BATMAN #15, and what the latest recruit to the Joker’s cause could mean for Batman. (The answer: Nothing the least bit good.)

Finally, we also unveiled the first of 12 unforgettable moments comprising 2012’s DC Comics’ Hall of Fame. These are the cream of the crop in what was a particular good year for DC and our fans. Of course, it was an absolutely GREAT year for Superman and Wonder Woman, and all of that started with one heavily discussed kiss…

Look for more special holiday and end-of-year features in the days ahead, including the rest of 2012’s Hall of Fame. But for now, all of you be safe, have a good weekend and we’ll see you again in seven.

DC Week-In-Review: December 7th

In a week that saw The Dark Knight Rises coming out on Blu-Ray and DVD, “Death of the Family” coming to Detective Comics and Huntress firing her first crossbow on Arrow, who would’ve thought that the thing we’d be talking about most this week was a pair of handcuffs? But if this year’s taught us anything, it’s to expect the unexpected. And maybe not to get too attached to our bean salad.

Annnyhow, here’s what went down this week on the DC Comics website…

We started this week by looking ahead (it was a Monday, can you really blame us?). All the way ahead to next May, as a matter of fact. Because that’s when the second volume of Vertigo’s THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO adaptation hits stores.

After that, it was time to break out the champagne to celebrate the “Robot Chicken DC Comics Special” and Cartoon Network’s “MAD” Annie Award nominations. So okay, maybe Mondays aren’t all bad…

Tuesday hit with the force of a batarang as The Dark Knight Rises made its highly anticipated Blu-Ray debut. And as a thank you to fans who helped spread the word, we released an image from our next sure-to-be-blockbuster, Man of Steel. If you missed it, it features Henry Cavill in full costume as Superman…and a scene-stealing pair of handcuffs.

On Wednesday, DC Collectibles announced a new line of action figures tied to the upcoming Injustice: Gods Among Us videogame. They also released a new trailer for their upcoming Arrow statue. Next spring, all of us will be able to hang with Oliver Queen!

Speaking of Arrow, did you catch this week’s new episode? If you did, you saw Helena Bertinelli pick up her trademark crossbow for the first time and make her debut as Huntress. We’ve been talking about it since Wednesday, but we’d imagine you’d rather hear executive producer Marc Guggenheim’s thoughts on the episode. Of course, if you missed the episode, you can still share in the fun. You can watch the whole thing right now. Yes, right now.

Thursday was all about gift-giving here on DCComics.com. This was certainly true in the holiday sense, as seen in our latest 5.2 Reasons column—er, make that our 5.2 Gifts column. But we also brought the gift of information! James Robinson gave us some clues about what to expect in EARTH 2 #8. Also, we announced that the upcoming Justice League of America series will feature Martian Manhunter backups co-written by Matt Kindt. Finally, in a really exciting bit of news for fans of sci-fi, we revealed that Harlan Ellison—the writer of some of the best science fiction of our generation—is teaming up with Paul Chadwick of Concrete fame for HARLAN ELLISON’S 7 AGAINST CHAOS, a new original graphic novel coming from DC in 2013.

That would be a great way to end the week, but you know what’s also a great way of ending the week?

Friday.

Especially when we announce that Starfire will be taking center stage in an upcoming issue of DC Universe Presents. And when we announce an exciting new writer for Birds of Prey. And when we break down the great twist in this week’s DETECTIVE COMICS #15. Not read it yet? Well, if you click here we hope you enjoy getting surprising endings spoiled for you online.

Okay, we’re officially ready for the weekend, and that Dark Knight trilogy marathon we have planned for Sunday. Maybe we’ll play through Arkham City again on Saturday to prepare…

See you again in seven!

DC Week-In-Review: November 30th

We realize we’re smack dab in the middle of the holiday season, and that we should be on our absolute best behavior (we don’t want to find ourselves unwrapping any lumps of coal this year—not when The Dark Knight Rises Blu-Ray, MAD’s 60-year Anniversary Book and…well, this are all coming out just in time for Christmas). But this week, we were never better than when we were being a little bad. Ocean Master made his grand debut in the pages of AQUAMAN #14. Huntress took aim in this week’s Arrow. While over on Vertigo…

Eh, we’re getting ahead of ourselves. Let’s just get to this week’s review.

Here’s what went down this week on the DC Comics website…

We already told you about Ocean Master, but if you’re not a regular Aquaman reader, perhaps you didn’t know that Aquaman #14 officially kicked off the highly anticipated “Throne of Atlantis” crossover. Look for high stakes on the high seas in both Aquaman and Justice League over the months ahead, and to ensure you don’t miss an issue, we put together this handy-dandy little checklist for you.

Last summer, Quentin Tarantino got everyone’s attention when he said that he’d be adapting his full, uncut script for Django Unchained into a can’t-miss comic book miniseries. On Tuesday, we gave everyone their first look at it, with art care of Scalped artist R.M. Guéra.

Wednesday brought with it a new edition of Spoiler Alert from DC Collectibles (which, while it may not be clear just yet, also represents us putting our best bad foot forward *hint hint*). The first image was pretty head-scratching, but you can look for further images and the final reveal on the DC Collectibles Facebook page over the days ahead.

That evening brought us a brand new episode of Arrow, featuring everyone’s favorite shirtless—er, emerald archer and a very familiar female vigilante. Yes, the Huntress made her crossbow-wielding debut. But did you know the episode was co-written by DC writer and Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns? If you missed it, you can watch the episode in full right here.

This week also saw the release of TALON #2, which remains one of the newest comics on our slate (at least until those “fourth wave” titles come along). Talon is unique in DC COMICS – THE NEW 52 in that it’s the only comic starring a character that didn’t exist prior to the New 52. If you haven’t checked it out yet, you should give it a spin. With only three issues out, it won’t take long to get caught up. But no need to take our word on it. Not when co-writer James Tynion IV has such interesting things to say about it.

Let’s face it, heroism is sexy. So it’s not surprising that super heroes can be sexy. But what did take a few people by surprise was MTV Geek’s recent post that elected Aquaman the sexiest super hero alive. Well, it sure didn’t surprise us. In fact, we listed off plenty of reasons why Aquaman is sexy in our latest 5.2 Reasons. (Though we’re sure all of those panels of him shirtless and dripping wet also don’t hurt.)

Also on Thursday, we posted the latest sword-swinging character clip for Injustice: Gods Among Us. Maybe Deathstroke’s just angry that he wasn’t elected the sexiest super hero. He gets our vote for biggest badass, though.

This morning, we posted the latest spoiler-spilling edition of This Just Happened. Before Watchmen returned this week with both BEFORE WATCHMEN: SILK SPECTRE #4 and BEFORE WATCHMEN: OZYMANDIAS #4, and intriguingly, both issues portrayed the first meeting of the Crimebusters.

Finally, we wrapped up this week with a look at tomorrow’s SUPERMAN BEYOND #11, which features some key changes for Superman. How key? Well, how about a new career and a new secret identity?

Okay, we ended things on a heroic note, but we were plenty bad this week. Hopefully, our friends and family didn’t notice (to say nothing about the big guy at the North Pole). We’ll be back and hopefully on better behavior next week, but until then, stay super heroic and we’ll see you again in seven.

...Oh, all right, one more link. As we were finishing up the review, we got some breaking news. Entertainment Weekly just broke the announcement that they've cast Slade Wilson on Arrow. And it's someone who's already known for playing a professional killer...of a sort. Told you it was more fun being bad.

DC Week-In-Review: November 16th

So how about that “Fourth Wave,” eh? Last week, we announced Katana and Vibe, two new ongoing titles about a couple of up-and-comers in DCU, which join the already announced Justice League of America and Threshold to form the “Fourth Wave” of new comics to join DC COMICS – THE NEW 52. This week, they were all officially solicited, along with new installments of “Death of the Family,” “He’l on Earth,” Before Watchmen and the latest storyline to rock the Lantern Corps, “Wrath of the First Lantern.” But lest you think we’re all about the doom and gloom around here, don’t overlook the fact that love is also in the air…by way of a new, star-packed anthology of romance stories that’s set to arrive just in time for Valentine’s Day.

Here’s what went down this week on the DC Comics website…

So, about that anthology. It’s called YOUNG ROMANCE: A NEW 52 VALENTINE’S DAY SPECIAL #1, and it stars a cast of DC all-stars on its 64 pages and creating them as well (with writers and artists that include Andy Diggle, Phil Jimenez, Gene Ha, Becky Cloonan, Peter Milligan and more). Look for it on February 6, 2013.

We also announced…a whole lot of new issues. That’s what happens when it’s time for group solicits! Click on the links below to check out the February solicits for each of our groups:

After that, we tipped our hat (and may have danced the “truffle shuffle” when no one is looking) to SWAMP THING VOL. 1: RAISE THEM BONES and WONDER WOMAN VOL. 1: BLOOD, which both made Amazon’s list of the Best Comics and Graphic Novels of 2012. Also snagging some end-of-the-year acclaim was BATMAN: EARTH ONE, which Barnes & Noble listed as one of the “Best Quirky, Beautiful, Different Books of 2012.” We’d also throw in “totally frickin’ badass” as well, but that’s just us.

Speaking of graphic novels, Vertigo saw the release of two amazing, gorgeous new original hardcovers on Wednesday: the first volume of their eagerly anticipated adaptation of THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO and FABLES: WEREWOLVES OF THE HEARTLAND, an original Fables graphic novel that can be enjoyed by readers even if they don’t follow the ongoing Fables series.

Wednesday also brought us a new installment of Caption This! from our pals at DC Collectibles. Darkseid and his Parademons are conquering the universe…by busting out their best disco moves.

“Death of the Family” continued to be a hot topic among fans, which is hardly surprising considering this week the storyline continued in three different comics: BATMAN #14, BATGIRL #14 and SUICIDE SQUAD #14. But it wasn’t just the fans who were talking about it. We also heard from Batman artist Greg Capullo and writer Scott Snyder.

But if crazed, faceless psychopaths are a little too dark for your Dark Knight tastes, we also released a new installment of Batman: Li’l Gotham. This one features the Penguin and an army of Thanksgiving-protesting turkeys. Oh, and the quirky, cool watercolor art of Dustin Nguyen.

2012’s been a pretty good year for all of us here at DC, and we’re hoping it’s been a good one for you too. At the very least, we’re pretty sure we can end it on a good note for you one you with our Top 12 of 12 Sweepstakes.

Yes, we love winning DC sweepstakes (or we’d imagine we’d love winning them if we weren’t employees and ineligible to enter), but you know what else we love? Amazing, heroic women. Especially when they put on a mask and costume and go out and fight crime.

Finally, while it’s been a pretty great week for us, it’s been a pretty brutal one for the Green Lantern Corps, and a downright awful one for one Lantern. If you’re curious what we’re talking about, you should read GREEN LANTERN CORPS #14. Or check out today’s spoiler-spilling This Just Happened.

Just a note, we’ll be taking a pass next week so that we can sleep off the previous day’s turkey dinner. But we’ll be back with another DC Week-In-Review on the 30th. See you then and have a great week of family, feasting, football and fighting off those Black Friday crowds!

DC Week-In-Review: November 9th

There are big weeks, and then there are astronomical ones, and this week is without a doubt in the latter camp. After all, while our stories are frequently set among the stars—especially if you’re a Green Lantern reader—we don’t often spotlight people who build their careers studying and teaching people about stars. However, that’s precisely what we did this week. We also introduced three new ongoing comics that will be coming soon to DC COMICS – THE NEW 52 and made a major announcement concerning where you can read our comics digitally.

But we’re getting a bit ahead of ourselves. Let’s recap these events and everything else we’ve been talking about since the weekend.

Here’s what went down this week on the DC Comics website…

We started things off with a few major announcements. We’d previously announced a new Justice League of America ongoing that's due to hit shops in February, but on Monday we announced that its first issue will be getting 52 variant covers. But that’s not all! We also announced that Katana and Vibe, two of the new JLA’s members, will be getting their own titles. And as if that weren’t already plenty, we also announced the new creative team for fellow member Green Arrow’s hit series: Jeff Lemire (Animal Man, Justice League Dark) and Andrea Sorrentino (I, Vampire). Be sure to click here and check out MTV Geek for all the details.

Also on the same day, world renowned astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson helped us put Krypton on the map with a history-making appearance in ACTION COMICS #14. For a fun illustration of how we went about doing this, be sure to check out this cool animated video, which breaks down the method deGrasse Tyson used to pinpoint Krypton’s location. Finally, for a breakdown of Action Comics #14 revelatory—and very moving—final page, don’t miss this week’s edition of This Just Happened. But be warned, here there be spoilers!

On Tuesday, we gave fans of Arkham City and DC Collectibles their first look at the new Arkham City Deadshot action figure. And speaking of Arkham City, we also celebrated the 50th chapter of Batman: Arkham Unhinged, the popular digital first series set in the world of the bestselling videogame.

On Wednesday, we made reading your favorite DC comic books easier and more convenient than ever before when we announced that our entire line-up of periodical comics will now be available in the three biggest e-bookstores. We’ve come a long way from spinner racks.

Big week, but we weren’t anywhere near finished. Just yesterday, we announced the latest member of DC Comics – The New 52. You’ve seen him show up in Justice League Dark, Sword of Sorcery and Animal Man, but starting in March, John Constantine will be lighting up the pages (and lighting up in the pages) of his own monthly New 52 comic.

We also spotlighted Jeff Lemire, a man who’s quite familiar with Mr. Constantine, in this week’s edition of 5.2 Reasons. It’s no surprise that we’re pretty big fans of his work around here…but then again, it seems like many of you are as well!

That’ll just about do it for this week’s review, but we’ll leave you with this awesome new trailer for the upcoming Bombshells Wonder Woman statue from DC Collectibles. Also, you may want to keep an eye on THE SOURCE today for a couple more announcements. Though, uh…you didn’t hear that from us. ;)

See you in seven, DC fans!
