DC Week-In-Review: May 18th

Whew! It’s Friday and while we’re all counting down the hours to the weekend, what we’re really looking forward to here on DCComics.com is August. Group solicits for the month went out this week and there’s some great stuff to look forward to, isn’t there? A big batch of extra-sized annuals hit the stands, Batgirl squares off against Batwoman, Swamp Thing meets up with Animal Man in a crossover, and two new BEFORE WATCHMEN titles make their debut. And speaking of BEFORE WATCHMEN, those new covers sure had you talking! But let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

Here’s what went down this week on the DC Comics website…

We’d better make certain our air conditioners are in good working order in August because it sounds like we’re going to be spending a lot of time inside reading comics. Group solicits for the month went out on Monday, and there’s quite a bit on tap for all the DC groups:  JUSTICE LEAGUE, SUPERMAN, BATMAN, GREEN LANTERN, THE DARK, THE EDGE, YOUNG JUSTICE, BEYOND DC COMICS THE NEW 52 and BEFORE WATCHMEN.

We also revealed some new Before Watchmen covers. To say some of them aren’t for the faint of heart or easily offended is to put it mildly. As a bonus, we gave you your first glimpse of the variant covers for SILK SPECTRE #1.

On the subject of variant covers, we showed off some great ones for THE SHADE #9, BATMAN #10 and DEATHSTROKE #10.

Like many of you, we’ve been wondering how “The Culling” is going to wrap up in the pages of TEEN TITANS next week, but this week we started thinking about the aftermath. Actually, we did more than just think about it. We gave you a peek at what comes next for SUPERBOY, TEEN TITANS, LEGION LOST and teased the series spinning out of this crossover event, THE RAVAGERS.

Finally, we invited you to go on a DCComics.com “talent search,” as we showed off a few of our new talent portraits and bios and invited you to search the site for more. How many can you find?

Not bad for seven days! We hope you all enjoy the weekend, and we’ll see you next Friday for another Week-In-Review!

DC Week-In-Review: May 11th

So, for all of you wait-for-the-trade types, this week saw the release of BATMAN VOL. 1: THE COURT OF OWLS, which collects the first seven issues of Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo’s highly acclaimed NEW 52 relaunch of BATMAN. As if you couldn’t tell by the subtitle, this is also the story arc that introduced the Court of Owls, who are now causing trouble for every member of Batman’s crew in this month’s massive crossover event, “Night of the Owls.” We thought it was only fit to celebrate this sure-to-be-historic storyline and trade collection by highlighting some of the book’s bonus features on the website this week. And if that wasn’t enough, we also announced five new annuals, showed off some stylish new tees, and introduced two of the “spudliest” heroes to ever slip on the spandex.

Here’s what went down this week on the DC Comics website…

As mentioned, we began by giving you a glimpse at some of the supplemental goodies included in Batman Vol. 1. Take a gander at page 21, 22, 23, 24 and some bonus character sketches by Greg Capullo!

Sticking to the world of the Dark Knight, the villainous Bane’s been spotted in…beautiful, sunny Santa Monica? Well, yes, as a part of Kitson’s beautiful high-end t-shirt display.

Quick, what comes only once a year with a sack full of surprises for good comic fans the world over? It’s not Christmas—it’s our yearly slate of annuals! (The sack was figurative, all right?) This week we announced five new extra-sized annual issues: DETECTIVE COMICS ANNUAL #1, SUPERMAN ANNUAL #1, THE FLASH ANNUAL #1, GREEN LANTERN ANNUAL #1 and JUSTICE LEAGUE INTERNATIONAL ANNUAL #1.

Who knew that combining superheroes with starchy vegetables would be such a winning prospect? But judging by your response to our Superman and Wonder Woman Potato Head feature, this is an idea that just might take root.

And finally, anyone out there up for a road trip? The Tumbler and Bat-Pod sure are. We’re revving up for this summer’s release of The Dark Knight Rises by taking them on a North American tour. Be sure to check the tour schedule to see if your city’s included.

Speaking of hitting the road, it’s just about time for the weekend to start. Remember to call your mothers and we’ll see you again in seven!

DC Week-In-Review: May 4th

We’re big on big weeks here in the Week-In-Review, and let’s face it, they don’t get any bigger than this one. The New 52’s “Second Wave” kicked off with four spectacular new ongoing comics. The very first New 52 trade collections hit stores, including the beautiful, bookshelf-enhancing, jealousy-inspiring Justice League Vol. 1 hardcover. “The Culling” got underway in the pages of TEEN TITANS ANNUAL #1. And of course, the shadows grew longer as the “Night of the Owls” continued in both DETECTIVE COMICS and BATWING.

Of course, for comic book fans (and fans-to-be) the fun didn’t end there. This Saturday is Free Comic Book Day, and we made sure you were both prepared and pumped for the big day with a pair of features designed to give the day an added dose of awesomeness.

Here’s what went down this week on the DC Comics website…

Are you as excited about The New 52’s “Second Wave” as we are? We’ll admit it. We couldn’t help teasing three of our new series this week: WORLD’S FINEST, EARTH TWO and THE RAVAGERS.

Of course, with all this talk about “Second Wave,” it’s sometimes easy to overlook the fact that many of you haven’t yet discovered our first wave of New 52 titles. If that’s you, there’s no better time to start since you can now download all of their first issues for 99 cents.

And for any new Justice League readers who prefer to read comics in print, we have you covered too! JUSTICE LEAGUE VOL. 1: ORIGIN is a hardcover collection that compiles the first six issues of Geoff Johns and Jim Lee’s historic relaunch of the world’s greatest super hero team. We celebrated by showing off some sketches of Batman, Superman, Green Lantern, Cyborg and a few other favorites.

Finally, we counted down to FCBD by fives. Namely, five reasons why this year’s FCBD can’t be missed and five tips from retailers on how to make the most out of FCBD.

Oh, and that’s not all. You may want to keep your eye on this blog between now and Saturday. Just sayin’.

With that little tease, we’re off for another week. Have a great Free Comic Book Day and we’ll see you all in seven!

DC Week-In-Review: April 27

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but that didn’t stop our artists from sharing plenty of insightful words with us this week (as well as some amazing pictures). With the Second Wave of New 52 titles just on the horizon, we spoke with some of the amazing illustrators bringing these great comics to life. We also gave a behind-the-scenes tour of our office, showed off some Before Watchmen and New 52 art, and wrapped things up with two big announcements.

Here’s what went down this week on the DC Comics website…

We started things off by giving BUZZFEED and CNET a behind the scenes tour of our offices in midtown Manhattan. Along the way, we may have accidentally lost sight of some Before Watchmen and New 52 Second Wave art. You don’t think they might’ve posted any of it on the Internet, do you?

After that, we handed things over to our artists, and boy, did they have some interesting stuff to say about our upcoming projects:

Nicola Scott dropped some hints about EARTH 2.

Bryan Hitch also shared some words on EARTH 2, and showed off his variant cover.

Steve Pugh discussed the difference between his earlier experience drawing ANIMAL MAN and his current one.

Timothy Green teased ANIMAL MAN ANNUAL #1.

Chris Burham spoke about working with Grant Morrison on BATMAN INCORPORATED.

David Finch told us what to expect from BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT now that Gregg Hurwitz is writing it.

Travel Foreman showed us some of his upcoming pages from BIRDS OF PREY.

Mateus Santolouco broke down what it’s like collaborating with China Miéville on DIAL H.

Ariel Olivetti proved to us that soldiers fighting dinosaurs is every bit as awesome as we imagined it would be with his art from GI COMBAT.

Ian Churchill introduced a new character from THE RAVAGERS.

And Jesus Saiz and Andres Guinaldo discussed what wicked things can happen when you cross SUICIDE SQUAD with RESURRECTION MAN. (Psst! There are chainsaws!)

From the amazingly rendered pencils of some of the best artists in comics, we move on to…stop-motion plastic dolls? Yes, if you haven't heard, Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and all of the rest of your favorite DC Super Heroes are coming to Robot Chicken.

Finally, we announced the brand new DC Nation app, which offers instant access to the best in all-ages DC Comics content. Whether you download it for your kids, or only say that you’re downloading it for your kids, you’re going to want it. So click here to get it!

Talk about a good-looking week! And things are only looking better from here. See you in seven!

DC Week-In-Review: April 20

So, can you believe that wedding proposal? It just goes to show that anything can happen at a convention. But emerald-tinted romance wasn’t the only thing in the air this week. There was also plenty of excitement as we unrolled all of our exclusive C2E2 coverage, announced two new digital first series and counted down the days to the beginning of Night of the Owls. And speaking of things we still can’t believe…have you read the ending of BATMAN #8 yet?!

Here’s what happened on the DC Comics website this week…

We brought C2E2 to DCComics.com with exclusive CON AWAY FROM CON coverage. And there’s more on the way, so keep an eye on this page.

We’ll soon be offering new digital content five days a week with the launch of BATMAN digital and AME-COMI GIRLS, two exciting new digital first comics that you can read about right here.

After that, we gave you a taste of what you can expect from THE SHADE #8, along with an exclusive first look at Jill Thompson’s variant cover.

Lots of people have been talking about THE NEW FRONTIERSMAN. But have you discovered all that lies underneath? If you’re interested in BEFORE WATCHMEN, what you should be watching is this web page.

But as great as all of this has been, we’ve all been looking forward the most to one particular night this week: the Night of the Owls! We celebrated the start of this hugely anticipated crossover event by talking to some of the folks responsible for it: Scott Snyder, Greg Capullo, James Tynion IV, Rafael Albuquerque and Mike Marts.

What a week! And trust us, things are only getting better from here. See you in seven!

DC Week-In-Review: April 13

It’s been a week of conventions, collectibles and this thing called The Culling here on DCComics.com. And while you should keep an eye on the website all weekend long for exclusive C2E2 CON AWAY FROM CON coverage, there was plenty of news to break before we even left for Chicago. Let’s take a look at some of it, shall we?

Here’s what happened on the DC Comics website this week…

HE HAS THE POWER! And a new comic book. We started things off by announcing a new HE-MAN AND THE MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE® series that will be kicking off in July.

After that we unveiled this week’s solicits for all of the various DC groups: Justice League, Superman, Batman, Green Lantern, The Dark, The Edge, Young Justice, Before Watchmen and Beyond The New 52.

The just-announced NATIONAL COMICS promises to shine the proverbial spotlight on some of the more unique characters from deep within the DC pantheon. It’s coming in July.

What is The Culling? It’s a mysterious, game-changing storyline taking place in the pages of SUPERBOY, TEEN TITANS and THE RAVAGERS, and it’s got everyone talking. See what Scott Lobdell, Tom DeFalco, Brian Cunningham, Chris Conroy, Howard Mackie and Ian Church had to say about it.

On Wednesday we broke the news that DC Direct is now DC Collectibles. (Though maybe “break” isn’t the right word to use when talking about collectibles.)

And finally, we ended our week on the cool, crisp streets of Chicago for the Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo. We counted down the days leading up to it with three survival tips before posting our panel schedule on Thursday. But those were mere appetizers for the main course that we’ll be serving up all weekend long: DC’s exclusive C2E2 CON AWAY FROM CON coverage.

From Eternia to Chicago… Not a bad week! That’s it for now, but we hope to see some of you at C2E2, and every one of you back here in seven days for another Week-In-Review.

DC Week-In-Review: April 6

If only every week could have such a “super” start. We started last weekend by unveiling the new MAN OF STEEL logo, which quickly gathered thousands of likes and comments on Facebook. After that, we continued to soar high with some amazing cover reveals and a close look at the new Swamp Thing before wrapping up the week by announcing—and celebrating—our 15 Eisner Award Nominations!

Here’s what went down on the DC Comics website this week…

We started by reminding you of your plans for June 14, 2013 as we showed off the new MAN OF STEEL logo. You didn’t have to look up in the sky to see it. It was pretty much all over the Internet.

After that, we took a close look at Swamp Thing’s new look, which was revealed on the cover of this week’s SWAMP THING #8. So what do you think of it?

We also had you covered when it comes to upcoming DC covers with first looks at the covers for SWAMP THING #11, DIAL H #3, ANIMAL MAN #11, G.I. COMBAT #3, DETECTIVE COMICS #9, WORLDS’ FINEST #3 and BATMAN, INCORPORATED #3. Whew!

Still not enough Swamp Thing for you? We spoke with Scott Snyder and Jeff Lemire about two of the premiere titles from THE DARK family of DC comics, SWAMP THING and ANIMAL MAN. What’s it like working on a title so closely related to a comic written by someone else? Snyder and Lemire spill the beans. (And we’re still waiting for them to clean them up. Come back, guys!)

Finally, we offered up a proverbial toast to all of our Eisner Award nominees. There were 15 of them in total for DC Entertainment. Congrats, guys! We’ll see you in San Diego.

And we’ll see you in a week. Whether you’re observing Passover, Easter or simply Saturday and Sunday, have a wonderful weekend!

DC Week-In-Review: March 30

We started off this week by proudly celebrating diversity in comics as BATWOMAN was honored by the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community before announcing our plans for the LA Times Festival of Books and this weekend’s Emerald City Comicon. But this week will likely go down in DC history as the week that everyone was dialing H.

Here’s what went down on the DC Comics website this week…

The 23rd Annual GLAAD Media Awards recognized BATWOMAN as the year’s Outstanding Comic Book. Unfortunately, Kate Kane couldn’t make it to the ceremony to accept the award, but we’re all extremely honored on her behalf.

We gave you a first look at the cover for AQUAMAN #8 along with Bernard Chang’s variant cover for THE FLASH #8. (We call them “first looks,” but if you’re like us you’ve gone back and looked at them a second, third or possibly fortieth time by now.)

Karen Berger, Paul Cornell, Jeff Lemire, Bob Wayne and all shared their enthusiasm for China Miéville’s upcoming DIAL H. And later, Mr. Miéville himself dropped in to share a few words along with a wonderfully eerie page by Mateus Santolouco. Make sure you pick up the first issue on May 2nd to see what all the buzz is about.

We gave a tour of our New York office to a special group of teenagers, and Phil Jimenez told them the secret to success in comics. If you want to know what that is, you’ll have to click here.

This weekend is Emerald City Comicon in Seattle, and DC will be there with some of our best artists, writers and editors in tow. We’ll also be at the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books in April with a BEFORE WATCHMEN panel and a Director’s Cut screening of the WATCHMEN film.

Editor Pat McCallum gave us a crazed and furious update on what to expect in upcoming issues of RED LANTERNS. And possibly spent a day in a padded room afterwards. Possibly.

Finally, our friends at the Cartoon Network announced BEWARE THE BATMAN, a new CG-animated series hitting the airwaves like a batarang later this year.

It’s been a busy seven days, and we’re primed to do it all again next week. See you then!

DC Week-In-Review: March 23

While we finished the weekend getting rained on at WonderCon, the outlook was bright this week on DCComics.com with a glimpse of the very edgy looking ARROW and the news about the upcoming BATMAN LIVE.

Here’s some of the DC news we broke this week…

Who says Gotham isn’t a real city? BATMAN LIVE promises to take us all there when it comes to North America in September.

No WonderCon pass? No problem! This week the coolest con was the Con Away From Con, which we provided by giving you breaking news and exclusive photos and videos from WonderCon.

We gave you your first look at Oliver Queen in ARROW, the highly anticipated pilot currently in development for the upcoming season.

For those of you who like a little crime-fighting with your LEGO bricks, we showed off the new trailer for LEGO BATMAN 2: DC SUPERHEROES and argued about whether to describe it as hilarious or action-packed. (We decided it’s both.)

Off-site, MTV GEEK's solid interview with GREEN ARROW writer Ann Nocenti is making us happy. (But not TOO happy, since as Ann points out, being happy isn't always a good thing.)

SUPERMAN VS. THE ELITE is our latest original animated movie. It had its premiere at WonderCon, but you can watch the trailer right here.

Finally, we gave you a glimpse at Gene Ha’s mad design skills with a look at his designs for Spore and A.R.G.U.S. Look for their fully rendered forms in upcoming issues of JUSTICE LEAGUE.

And look for us back here in seven for another Week-in-Review!

DC Week-In-Review: March 16

We’re not claiming to be Guardians over here, but we’re pretty sure there’s a cosmic law stating that any week beginning and ending with BEFORE WATCHMEN news is going to be a good one. And this week was very good here at DCComics.com. We announced the release dates for the first four issues of Before Watchmen, broke down a couple of “wonderful” pages from BATMAN: ARKHAM UNHINGED, and debuted an exclusive image from SUPERMAN VS. THE ELITE, our latest full-length animated feature. And all of this was before the start of WonderCon on Friday.

Here’s some of the DC news to hit the website this week…

Let’s start with that Before Watchmen news. NITE OWL, SILK SPECTRE, THE COMEDIAN and THE MINUTEMEN are all coming in June. So make your plans now.

Can’t wait till Wednesday? Yeah, we’re not much for waiting either, so we’re giving you early looks at Wednesday’s new comics, like Monday’s preview of GREEN LANTERN #7 or Tuesdays previews of, well, pretty much everything else.

We also broke down two pages from next week’s issue of BATMAN: ARKHAM UNHINGED. Who knew Vicki Vale looked so good in graphite?

Planning on spending the weekend in Anaheim? You’ll definitely want to take a look at our WonderCon schedule, and join us tonight for the premiere of SUPERMAN VS. THE ELITE.

Finally, we wrapped things up by revealing the new look of SWAMP THING, care of BUZZFEED, and setting Len Wein and J. Michael Straczynski loose on the fine folks at AICN to talk about Before Watchmen.

Bookended by Before Watchmen. That’s a stellar week and that’s this week’s Week-In-Review. See you in seven!
