IGN on FABLES #89
October 15, 2009
I don't think there has ever been a better time to be a Fables fan than right now. The Great Fables Crossover is behind us. Peter & Max exceeded just about everyone's expectations. Cinderella: From Fabletown With Love is set to debut in a few weeks. But perhaps most importantly, the core series is extremely engrossing and as exciting as it's ever been. Issue #88 was one of the best I've read in a long time, and issue #89 is even better still.
Every so often, Fables shifts its focus to an extremely unlikely hero. Over the course of several months this hero is thrust into a position of great importance and given the opportunity to stand tall with the likes of Bigby Wolf and Prince Charming. Boy Blue had his breakout role midway into the series. Flycatcher was the star of the long-winded yet effective "Good Prince" arc. And by all appearances, it looks to be Bufkin's turn. Bufkin is the unlikeliest hero yet, but watching him rise to the occasion is all the more entertaining because of it. Finding himself trapped in the ruins of the Fabletown office with a released genie and an angry Baba Yaga, Bufkin has no choice but to go on the offensive. Make no mistake - Bufkin draws first blood in this battle, and I look forward to seeing how the conflict plays out in the next two issues. Fables works best when Bill Willingham blends the mortal peril with humble heroes and generous amounts of humor. There's plenty of all to be had in Bufkin's quest.
