This fall, The CW’s most watched series, Arrow, takes aim at an all-new season, and if the show’s first two years have been any indication of its ability to hit the mark of excellence, viewers should prepare themselves for yet another bullseye.

Starring Stephen Amell as the titular, sharpshooting hero, Arrow follows the adventures of billionaire-playboy-turned-masked hero Oliver Queen. After being marooned on an island for five years, Oliver returned home to Starling City with a new purpose: to protect his city and its citizens against those who seek to destroy it. Since his return, he’s faced off against ruthless drug dealers, deadly assassins, crazed criminals, and some of the world’s most feared super-villains. Last season culminated with an epic showdown between Oliver and his onetime mentor-now-enemy Slade Wilson (aka Deathstroke).

In fact, therein lies the true greatness of the series: its willingness to embrace its comic book origins, while still grounding everything in reality. Well, that and the abs. We’ve seen direct references to comic book storylines like Green Arrow: Year One, to more subtle nods to comic continuity, like Connor Hawke, for eagle-eyed fans.

The show broke new boundaries last season with the introduction of Barry Allen, and this year, the all-new Flash series and Arrow will run on back-to-back days, opening the door for a wealth of storytelling potential. Add to that the casting of Ray Palmer, Ted Grant, and a confirmed appearance of Ra’s al Ghul, and we’re positively quivering in anticipation for what the series has in store.

2 on DVD and Blu-Ray now.
