Getting to Know an Unwelcome Visitor

As you might have surmised from the events in National City and Hank's memories, the White Martians aren't peaceful like their green-skinned counterparts. Their physiology reflects it too; their skin is practically like armor. The White Martians first appeared in JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #71. Hostile and unreasonable, they've wreaked havoc on Mars and invaded Earth. They possess powers similar to the Green Martians—shapeshifting, strength, and flight—but lack their compassion.

For more trouble from the White Martians, be sure to check out the first storyline in our ongoing Martian Manhunter comic by Rob Williams and Eddy Barrows.

The Heavy Weight of Survivor's Guilt

Like Kara, Hank carries around a tremendous burden. He survived when his family and most of his race did not. He lost his wife and daughters when the White Martians rose from below the surface and unleashed fire. Hank mentions his daughters to Kara and Alex. In MARTIAN MANHUNTER #3, a flashback of J'onn's showed he lost his daughter K'hym and his wife M'yri'ah to psychological combustion caused by a telepathic plague.

Burning from the Inside Out

Hank's memories of the White Martian's attack are filled with fire. The Martians have a connection with the element that stretches back into the pages of comic book history. The race has an innate fear of flames because of a plague unleashed by Ma'alefa'ak, J'onn's brother. The virus Ma'alefa'ak created became known as H'ronmeer's Curse. Whenever a Martian used their psionic abilities, they contracted the virus and a fire started in their minds. Few Green Martians survived Ma'alefa'ak's attack, and those who did developed a healthy phobia of fire.

Who's That Girl?

Supergirl has a double, and this time it isn't Hank. The lookalike spotted at the end of the episode is... nah, we're going to wait until next time to spill that secret.
