Taking Out the Trash

When Alfred and Bruce set out to find more information on Matches Malone, they go through the Mutants (a roaming Gotham gang) and their ironically named leader, Cupcake.

The name “Mutants” pays homage to the gang of vicious miscreants from Frank Miller’s classic THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS.  In the comic book, an aging Bruce Wayne comes out of retirement to take up the mantle of Batman once more and rid Gotham of the growing plague calling themselves the Mutants.  The story pushes the Caped Crusader to the limits as he fights to reclaim Gotham, save its citizens and crush the spreading Mutant ideology.

Born on a Monday

Did you catch what the Mutants were yelling during their fight as Alfred and Bruce approached? It was “Solomon! Grundy!”

Solomon Grundy is a powerful villain who made his comic book debut in ALL-AMERICAN COMICS #61 in 1944.  He’s named after the 1842 nursery rhyme “Solomon Grundy.”  An immortal zombie with super-strength and stamina, Grundy is virtually indestructible.

Solomon Grundy’s made enemies with a vast number of heroes throughout the DCU and has been featured in a number of important story arcs over the years and has crossed the city limits into Gotham on many occasions—frequently going toe-to-toe with the Caped Crusader! Anytime they meet, it takes all of Batman’s brains and brawn to overcome the big, gray brute!

See you next week!
