We're closing in on the home stretch of this season, Legends fans! Only three more episodes from here and things certainly aren't showing any sign of slowing down.
If you thought the death totem was a wild ride last week, well…I hope you were prepared for this one. I certainly wasn't—I used most of my necromancy jokes last week. (I don't actually have very many good necromancy jokes. Feel free to leave yours below in the comments. I am TOTALLY willing to surrender the spotlight on this one.)
This week was even more of the Death Totem in action and a bit of ominous foreshadowing from a few weeks back finally coming to light: Sara fell under Mallus's control. Or I suppose if you want to get technical, she fell under the Death Totem's control, which is...kind of like a vehicle for Mallus? It's a little complicated. Of the six totems, five of them were aligned with light while the sixth was buddy-buddy with Mallus and evil, so whoever ends up under the Death Totem's sway also ends up in Mallus's corner.
...I guess it's really not that complicated.
We've known for a while that Sara's been at risk to Mallus, but she's extra at risk to the Death Totem for reasons that might be obvious if you've followed her since her debut back over on Arrow. Sara's actually been dead before. She was resurrected and then brainwashed for a while, and despite obviously getting better and getting her freewill back over time, that's the sort of thing that sticks with you. I feel a little silly for not making the connection between Sara and the Death Totem last week when it was actually introduced, to be completely honest. It all seems pretty obvious here in retrospect.
Almost as obvious as Mick eventually wielding the Fire Totem, which, c'mon you guys, how amazing was that? I always knew my favorite Legend was destined for greatness, even if he kind of hates the whole situation and would really rather be anywhere but where he is right now.
I mean, who else could control the Fire Totem if not Heat Wave, right?
But that's enough on totem logistics for this week. I'd actually argue that the most important moment of tonight's episode was only totem-adjacent. We got to see the return of John Constantine with all the drama and flair that typically entails! By which I mean, he and Ava had a series of extremely awkward moments. I definitely get it. Having to work with your sort-of-girlfriend's warlock one-night-stand to save her soul from a demon isn't exactly a situation that screams comfort and ease…but it was pretty delightful to see Ava starting to come apart at the seams a little bit.
Also, how amazing is the news that if Legends returns next season, Constantine will be a series regular on it? Here in the #DCTV Couch Club, we’re big fans of his greatly missed, single season series (which if you haven’t seen, you totally need to). I’m not giving up on a potential return one day down the line—hey, if Roseanne can come back, surely a resourceful scamp like Constantine can—but in the meantime, getting a chance to see him on the deck of the Waverider each week will more than do.
...Man, you guys, what if Constantine and Gary become a thing? What would that relationship look like? Could it work? Should it work?
But back to the delightful Agent Sharpe. Ava has pretty rapidly climbed the favorite character ladder this season for me, and now I've got all sorts of anxiety about whatever is about to be revealed for her. She and Sara, despite their problems, have become one of the best relationships on the show and honestly, I would pay good money to see the continuation of this Ava/Sara/Constantine tension on screen next season.
That being said, I really don't buy tonight's breakup as a permanent thing. Maybe I'm in denial here, but I think whatever Ava's secret is, it might actually be something that brings her and Sara closer together. That, or maybe it will change the whole dynamic of their relationship into something that Sara can allow herself to work with?
What do you guys think? I've got the distinct feeling that we're on the cusp of a big revelation here (next week's episode is called "I, Ava"), so now is the time to get your theories and guesses in writing. Hit me with your best shots in the comments below.
See you in a week!
