Constantine: Can You Find the Fake?

Constantine: Can You Find the Fake?

This Friday, October 24th, NBC will premiere the eagerly awaited Constantine, their new horror series based on the iconic comic book character. Between 300 issues of Hellblazer, 18 issues of The New 52’s ongoing Constantine series, several acclaimed miniseries and original graphic novels, and numerous appearances in other bestselling comics like Swamp Thing and Justice League Dark, there’s no shortage of groundbreaking, highly imaginative comic book storylines for Constantine to draw inspiration from. However, it’s only natural that a few storylines may be a bit TOO out there (at least for network TV).

Four of the five storylines below actually took place in DC or Vertigo comic books. The fifth is completely made up on the spot. Can you find the fake?

1) Constantine is unwillingly displaced from his body so that Swamp Thing may use the British con man’s body to conceive a child with his human wife, Abby Arcane.

2) Constantine is asked to referee a soccer match between the forces of heaven and hell, discovering in the process that it’s the angels who are the far dirtier players.

3) John Constantine joins the cast of a reality TV show, and alongside a bunch of wannabe celebrities, must unlock the secrets of a deadly haunted house.

4) Constantine’s iconic trench coat is lost and has some dark adventures of its own in a multi-issue storyline narrated by the coat.

5) Constantine defeats the most powerful demon he’s ever faced with a pint of holy beer.

#1 took place in SWAMP THING #76 by Rick Veitch. #3 is the plot of DARK ENTRIES, an original Constantine graphic novel by Ian Rankin and Werther Dell’Edera. #4 is from “The Devil’s Trench Coat” by Peter Milligan and Giuseppe Camuncoli. It starts in HELLBLAZER #283. #5 is a plot point from “Dangerous Habits” by Garth Ennis and Will Simpson. It’s available in HELLBLAZER VOL. 5: DANGEROUS HABITS.

#2 is the fake. As far as we know, Constantine has never been asked to ref any sort of angel vs. demon football match… At least, so far.
