As some of you may know, I have a son named Gus. No really. I’m not talking about the antlered-hero Sweet Tooth, I really have an amazing little antler-less 15-month old at home named Gus too. The fact that I named my lead character after my newborn son should tell you how personal and important the Sweet Tooth saga is to me. Working on the first 12 issues of Sweet Tooth over the last year was really hard. Don’t get me wrong, I love waking up and drawing comics every day, but trying to maintain the rather intensive work schedule I need to keep and help raise a new baby has been really tough. Looking back I can remember months where I barely slept and still managed to squeeze out an issue. If it weren’t for my remarkable wife I surely wouldn’t have been able to. (Speaking of whom, check out this Sweet Tooth doll she made me!) Becoming a Dad has changed me…in ways I guess I really don’t fully realize myself yet. But watching the real Gus grow over the last year has been so incredible that I can’t help but wonder how the fictional Gus will evolve and change as a result? That’s the fun of doing an long-term, ongoing project like Sweet Tooth. You can plan the thing out in as much detail as you want before you start, but life has a way of changing you, and your stories have room to breath and grow as a result. I’m thankful for everyone who’s jumped on board to follow antlered-Gus’ journey. I know where he’s going, but exactly how he’ll get there is still a mystery.
