Assistant Editor Joe Hughes, who works on AMERICAN VAMPIRE, THE UNWRITTEN and much more, shares his firsts. What was the first... Convention you attended as a fan? I-CON. It was on my college campus, so not going would have been a pretty lazy move on my part. Convention you attended as a pro? My first day at DC was three days before New York Comic Con, so in my first week I only spent about five minutes at my desk. Job in the comic book Industry? If you ever shopped in Forbidden Planet NYC in the summer of 2002, I probably checked your bag. Comic book you worked on? I think the first book I worked on was THE UNWRITTEN #22, but the first book I had my name in was AMERICAN VAMPIRE #13. Comic book you read? World’s Finest #269. Batman is buried alive, but he escapes by dislocating both his shoulders, using insane yoga moves, and digging through the dirt with a piece of the coffin he was buried in. Because Batman is awesome. Graphic novel you read? José Muñoz and Carlos Sampayo’s “Billie Holiday.” It’s still one of my favorite books. Series you collected? Dwayne McDuffie and Denys Cowan did a storyline in Deathlok called “The Souls of Cyber Folk,” based on DuBois’ seminal work. That was the first time I remember thinking “I need every issue of this.” Writer you followed? Dwayne McDuffie and Harlan Ellison. When I was a kid I found a random issue of Daredevil written by Ellison. After that I decided I had to read every comic he ever wrote. That was also around the time I discovered Milestone Comics. ICON #1 changed my life. Artist you followed? Either José Muñoz or Brendan McCarthy, I think. Piece of original art you bought? I’ve only ever bought one: The first page of Dylan Horrocks and Farel Dalrymple’s “Dear Superman,” a short story in BIZZARO WORLD. Digital comic you downloaded? I honestly don’t remember. Probably something with Batman.
