5.2 Reasons We're Loving DC Comics Villains

Film critic Roger Ebert once said (aw yeah, getting all erudite, yo!), "Each film is only as good as its villain. Since the heroes and the gimmicks tend to repeat from film to film, only a great villain can transform a good try into a triumph." Basically, it's the whole "a hero is only as good as its villain" thing. And let's face it, when you have the World's Greatest Super Heroes, you better also have the World's Coolest Super-Villains to follow suit. Thankfully, we’ve got that covered.

From Lex Luthor and Zod to Black Manta and Sinestro to Darkseid and pretty much everyone in Arkham Asylum, the DC Universe has more than its fair share of awesome and instantly recognizable villains—and right now after the events of "Trinity War," they're pretty much running things.

Yes, here at DC Comics, it's Villains Month, and to celebrate the villainous victory (cause lord knows we won't be opposing them since we enjoy, you know, living) we're bringing you 5.2 Reasons We're Loving DC Comics Villains!

1. Forever Evil

Continuing from the conclusion of "Trinity War," the Crime Syndicate has recently escaped from the world of Earth 3 and subsequently disposed of the Justice League (all three of them). They’ve taken control of the planet, leaving the villains to run wild all across the DCU. The first issue effectively set the tone for the series, focusing on Lex Luthor—arguably one of the most dangerous villains in the world—ill at ease with the world's current state of affairs.

2. Villain-Centric Issues

As mentioned, September is Villains Month, and throughout the entire month, all of our regular titles have taken on a villainous spin. Each issue focuses on one of DC Comics' most popular villains, written and illustrated by some of the industry's best and newest talents. Digital copies are always available, but for print buyers, there's a limited number of special 3-D Lenticular covers available at local comic shops.

3. Necessary Evil

The upcoming documentary Necessary Evil: Super-Villains of DC Comics takes a look at the inner workings of some of the DCU's greatest villains. The documentary features interviews with comic book creators as well as filmmakers and actors. It's also narrated by Christopher freakin' Lee. In preparation for the October 25 release, you should also check out Necessary Evil: The Villains of the DC Universe graphic novel collection, which features stories from throughout comic book history starring some of those greatest villains. Check out an EXCLUSIVE clip below!

4. Forever Evil Sale

Running September 16, the digital Forever Evil Sale includes a number of classic villain-centric DCU tales, including Final Crisis, Villains United, Lex Luthor: Man of Steel, and more—all for only 99 cents each! Check it out over at the DC Comics digital store!

5. DC Collectibles Villain Action Figures

From Harley Quinn and the Joker to Captain Cold, Black Manta, and more, DC Collectibles has quite a number of action figures available based on the villains of the DC Universe—with more on the way every month! Definitely keep your eyes out for the upcoming Arkham Origins figures set for release later this year and the currently in-charge Crime Syndicate of America!

5.1 Justice League: Doom

5.2 Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths

One of our personal favorites, written by the late Dwayne McDuffie and featuring the Crime Syndicate!
