Sometimes people get EXACTLY what they deserve, and it’s hard not to feel that way about Lex Luthor after the events of last month’s issue of Future State: Superman vs. Imperious Lex. After manipulating the United Planets to grant membership to Lexor—the long-suffering planet that he lords over—Lex quickly withdrew his request when he discovered a massive vein of highly valuable energy crystals on Lexor. In the process, he was all too happy to make it clear that he only asked for membership so that the United Planets would help prop up Lexor’s struggling economy.
The problem for Lex was that at the very moment he was gloating to Lois Lane about how rich he was going to be, a brand-new system of energy was invented that would allow entire worlds to be powered without Lexor’s costly crystals. In other words, all those rocks Lex thought would bring him big stacks of cash are now worth about as much as…well, rocks.
Yet, as we see in next week’s Future State: Superman vs. Imperious Lex #3, while it may feel great to leave Lex to rot, savoring his downfall like the sweet symphony of cosmic justice that it is, there is the matter of Lexor. Yes, the planet’s citizens worship Lex like some sort of slick-scalped deity and were more than happy to attack Superman when he questioned their leader’s actions, but they can’t really be blamed for any of that. They’ve been told one thing for generations—Lex Luthor loves and provides for them. While Lex deserves exactly what he’s getting, the people of Lexor are just as much his victims as everyone else. This is the moral dilemma facing the United Planets and Superman now and there are no easy solutions as we learn in this first look at the new chapter.
Future State: Superman vs. Imperious Lex #3 by Mark Russell, Steve Pugh and Romulo Fajardo, Jr. is available in print and as a digital comic on Tuesday, March 30.
