Welcome to the DC Comics Art Academy, a series of art tutorials and interviews recorded at Comic-Cons featuring many of the gifted and unique artists working for DC today. In today's installment, Chris Uminga returns to the Art Academy stage, this time to draw a character that wasn't one of his Artist Alley collectibles—the Penguin. Chris demonstrates how he uses Copic markers to add depth and texture to his drawings as he discusses his journey as an artist, describes his love/hate relationship with art supplies and reveals why he draws such simple eyes.

Inspired by the popular artist alley convention experience, the new cutting-edge DC Artists Alley line from DC Collectibles merges indie design with DC’s most iconic characters. The first wave of designer vinyl figures showcases illustrator Chris Uminga’s offbeat interpretations of Wonder Woman, Batman and Superman and hits stores in June 2018. In this demo, Uminga discusses his unique “creepy-meets-cute” art style as he draws one of his all-time favorite DC characters, The Joker.
