NORTHLANDERS VOL. 1: SVEN THE RETURNED
In this first volume collecting NORTHLANDERS #1-8, DMZ writer Brian Wood stabs Viking lore in the face with a fresh take on what it means to be a warrior. Meet Sven, an exiled Viking prince who must return to the desolate lands of his birth to reclaim his vast inheritance upon the death of his father. See why Entertainment Weekly calls it "a well-reserched, richly realized world that illuminates politics and culture without getting bogged down in history-book stuff."
With the assistance of a small army, the battle for Sven's birthright begins. Vastly outnumbered by Gorm's forces, things begin to look bleak until some unforeseen allies help Sven's cause. But will it be enough in the end?
Sven's one-man guerrilla campaign to unseat his corrupt Uncle Gorm kicks off, with Sven exploiting Gorm's superstitions and reverence for the "old gods." Meanwhile, the Hunter's Daughter and Sven grow closer, but not as close as the enemy slave girl sharing Sven's bed nightly!
Every story has a beginning, and in this issue learn how Sven came to be, from his humble beginning as a child slave to his time spent with the Slavs and Russians to the returned hero we met in issue #1.
When we last saw Sven at the end of NORTHLANDERS Vol. 1, he was in exile on a remote island with a brand-new family and questioning if he truly managed to escape the dangers of the mainland. "Don't worry," his wife Enna had said. "There's no one coming." Well, after several decades pass, the epic story of "Sven, The Returned" is on the lips of poets across the land. And now a few mercenaries have decided to look him up...
