Convergence Fight of the Week: Steel vs. Gen 13

By Tim Beedle Monday, April 13th, 2015

The five super-powered teens of Gen 13 are looking for victory and the answer to one killer question… What's the breaking point of steel?

Hero against hero. City against city. With their very existence on the line, you know the heroes and villains of Convergence are going to fight hard to survive, no matter who stands in their way. With years of comic book history between them, it’s a fair bet that some of these fights are going to be ones for the ages and you’re not going to want to miss them. Because when the domes go down and the lights go up, there’s just one certainty—only one city will survive.

What’s the breaking point of steel? That’s the question at the heart of this week’s Convergence fight of the week. Powered by mechanics rather than anything superhuman, Steel is one of the few heroes living under the dome surrounding pre-Zero Hour Metropolis who didn’t lose his abilities. But when the dome comes down, all bets are off—something that becomes abundantly clear when the five super-powered teens of Gen 13 come calling.

Taking place this week in CONVERGENGE: SUPERMAN: THE MAN OF STEEL #1, written by legendary Steel writer Louise Simonson and drawn by June Brigman, Roy Richardson and John Rauch, this fight is definitely not a fight we’ve seen before, meaning both sides have no idea what to expect. And therefore, neither does the reader.

Let’s look at the combatants!

Steel (John Henry Irons)

A former ballistics expert who left his high-paying job to work construction after seeing his weapons used unscrupulously, John Henry Irons’ life took an even more unexpected turn after his life was saved by Superman. When the Man of Steel was tragically killed by Doomsday, Irons constructed an armor-plated suit and took on the persona of the super hero Steel. Steel’s suit not only offers him superb protection, but gives him enhanced strength, rocket-powered flight and the ability to fire metal bolts from his gloves.

Gen 13

A team of super-powered teenagers, Gen 13 is comprised of five youthful heroes—Freefall, Grunge, Rainmaker, Burnout and Caitlin Fairchild. What the team lacks in discipline, it more than makes up for with capability. Each member on his or her own is formidable. Together, they’re nearly unstoppable. Between Fairchild’s strength and mass, Burnout’s fire-wielding, Grunge’s absorption powers, Rainmaker’s weather control and Freefall’s gift with gravity, there are very few single heroes who could take them down. Which doesn’t bode well for Steel.
