Well, that’s one way to get the multiverse buzzing!

EW just unveiled the first image of Designated Survivor’s LaMonica Garrett as Mar-Novu, the powerful otherworldly figure known to DC fans the world over as the Monitor. While details are still scarce, the Monitor will play a pivotal role in this season’s crossover event, “Elseworlds.”

The Monitor, of course, was created by Marv Wolfman and George Pérez in the lead-up to their seminal CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS, in which the character played a major role. Since then, the Monitor and his kind have appeared in all of DC’s Crisis events, including 2006’s INFINITE CRISIS and 2008’s FINAL CRISIS.

While the Arrowverse has gotten increasingly ambitious with its crossovers, frequently drawing from beloved comic book events for inspiration, bringing the Monitor into the action takes things to an entirely new level. Mar-Novu is a figure of infinite power, who, in the comics, single-handedly kept our multiverse’s destruction at bay for millennia. What role he’ll play in the #DCTV crossover is unknown, but considering the planetary destruction visible in the image behind him, it certainly seems like the stakes will be high.

“Elseworlds” promised to be plenty big even before the announcement of the Monitor. The crossover will also feature the debut of Ruby Rose as Batwoman, along with the first of appearance of Gotham City within the Arrowverse, the debut of Elizabeth Tulloch as Lois Lane, the return of Tyler Hoechlin as Superman (who’s been photographed in his black suit), Constantine’s Jeremy Davies as Dr. John Deegan, the return of The Flash’s John Wesley Shipp, a “Freaky Friday” moment with the Flash and Green Arrow and much more.

The yearly crossover event kicks off on Sunday, December 9 at 8 p.m. (7 p.m. CST) on The CW and continues December 10th and 11th at the same time.
